Default Long Island OT'erz I need some help with Getting to Greenport

I have to go up for a wedding there and I was wondering what is the best way to get there. I can get to Penn Station but after that? I was also thinking of flying into Kennedy but then what? I live about 10-15 minutes from D.C amtrak trains and Airport. Also I have a ride back so driving isn't the best route for me just a last resort.

Thanks

Greenport is at the very end of the island.

Your best bet is renting a car.

Also, is it a German wedding?

Yeah, is there anyway around that? It doesn't look good for the train or the plane... I don't know if it's German, might be...I think it's going to be one of those weddings on the beach deals. Renting a car is another PITA because i'm under 25 and the under age rental car tax is 20-40 dollars on top of the price

Bottom line is if you aren't renting a car, you're just about screwed.

You can sit on the train for 30 hours, but outside of that you're not gonna have much luck. Greenport is the end of all existance on this side of the country, and the trains there are infrequent and incredibly long. Even driving you'd be looking at close to 2 hrs from Kennedy, depending how much of a maniac you are and traffic.

Your best bet would be to rent a car and drive both ways, sacrificing your ride back. Other then that the only option is the train really. (Or find an OT'er to chaufer you for a hefty fee)

Growing up on LI and going to Greenport twice, you need a car.

However, you can try flying from BWI to MacArthur via Southwest ($39 each way) and getting a car from the airport, which is quite far east in Suffolk county.

If you wanted to do rail, you could come up via Amtrak and then LIRR it to either Port Jefferson (north shore, eastern LI) or Riverhead (center of LI, further east) and then getting a car.

I suggest flying as it's quicker and way cheaper than Amtrak.

Rush hour on LI is really bad, and weekend driving during the day in the summer is just as bad. Avoid driving on the LIE and the other highways during those times if you can.

I second the suggestion to fly into MacArthur Airport by Southwest Air - you'll bypass the Queens-Nassau-Western suffolk traffic and be much closer to Greenport. There are plenty of car rental companies there too, maybe some will be a little less harsh with the age thing.

Try this company (Rent-A-Wreck) if you are going to rent a car - they aren't as mainstream as the other companies and they might give you a break on the rental fee.

(No, the cars aren't wrecked )

If you are interested in beating the crap of whatever eventual rental you get, let me know. I know plenty of backroads for you. It should help make the comute just a little better.

aparently there is an LRR(long island railway) train that goes from Penn Station to Greenport? I think it may work but it's about 5 hours of train ride which is just a little less than the train ride. I'm debating on not going to the wedding at all because of the dam commute.

The LIRR will take you there but it will take a VERY long time.

If you really want to take the train, take the MARC to BWI.

Yeah the train would be absolutely excruciating. I had to commute daily 45 min each way, and I can't even imagine sitting on the LIRR for 3 hours. The new trains they have aren't bad (much quieter and nicer) but the old ones are absolutely terrible. Noisy, and not very comfortable either.

The MacArthur->rent-a-car is really the best idea so far. Driving from JFK wouldn't be terrible. The LIE is bad, but as long as you don't hit it at rush hour its really not that bad. Esp on the weekend. I used to go bi-weekly to Greenport because they have one of the only bike friendly skateparks on LI. It was a trek, but we never had problems.
