1996 Legacy L wagon

Default Gonna be modding this month...

Alright, I had some cheap ideas to get my wagon looking a little different and wanted to run the ideas past you and see what you guys had to offer as far as advice or anything. I want to keep the mods and the car subtle and classy, non fad type mods, and something that'll still look good in a few years.

First of all, I am going to be tinting the windows. State law says 30% in rear and 70% up front max I believe, and I like have lots of visibility as it is, so I was thinking of doing just those numbers with some black reflective tint, since the car is green, I think that black will be best. It gets real hot here, and I don't really want to do the reflective tinting, but I like that it'll keep more heat out of my already dark car. I also want to do something like a 50% tint band across the top of the windshield since I have really light sensitive eyes, and I hate having the sun between the visor/mirror or when a passenger has their visor turned away. I was expecting this to cost $120-140. Is this a fair estimate for a wagon? Do you think I should make the tint band match one of the other tint levels, and if so which?

Next, I want to debadge the rear of the car, but then I was going to spray the legacy badge pearl black and put it back on the car. So this'd be another $10. To debadge it, I was going to use a hairdryer and some dental floss followed by bug and tar remover for the left over adhesive.

After that, I want to convert the amber rear turn signals to red using the transparent paint you can buy for RC cars. This would be another $5, but I didn't know if those who have done it have added a clear coat to it. I am not sure how the RC paint would be affected by clear coat, but I also wouldn't want the paint coming off the next time I wash the car.

Also, this was just an idea, and don't know how much I want to do it, but my hubcaps are totally scratched up, my tires are new, and I don't have the cash for wheels anyhow, so I was thinking of removing the hubcaps. But the black steel wheels look bad, so I was thinking of painting those silver/aluminum finish with the duplicolor wheel coating since I had good results with that stuff on some other wheels. They wouldn't look super hot, but atleast I wouldn't be associated with the driver who can't parrallel park and I plan to get some nice wheels down the road anyhow.

So anything you guys might have for advice, things you wish you had known maybe before you did the same type of stuff to your cars would be appreciated.

I believe they usually put the RC paint on the inside of the lens.

I had also been thinking of painting my badges with some spray tint so they wouldn't just be chrome shiny.

sounds like a plan, but I'd go with the same tint all around. Just my .02

I have 5% all around on my BE and have on every car for the last 12 years and have not been messed with yet, just FYI. But I would try to keep all of the film the same just looks better IMO. 150 sounds about right but maybe a bit low for a wagon.
I use a heat gun to get my badges off but a hair dryer will work as well. I normally just sit it in the sun the hit it with the heat gun and peal it off prying with a credit card. Clean it off and make sure to hit it with some wax as well.

The wheels may look ok I dont know. Worst case you can go get some new hubcabs and cover them if it looks bad. Prep will be your friend on this one.

As for the deamber I may stay away from that. I did it with candy apple red RC paint on my Jeep GC. It looks good at first but you will have to redo it once or twice a year as it starts to flake and look crappy, especially with the cold winters and hot summers here in CO. If you do it make sure to spray on the outside, mask off just the amber and do 3-4 coats until it matches and then some clear on top.

Good luck.
