Legacy 91 Legacy LS Turbo Swap

Im wondering if its possible to switchout my engine (EJ22T) for something that will give me more power. You see I blew my engine because my water pump went on me and took the slack off my timing belt which then fried my valve train I think. It overheated real bad and now it wont start at all. Put new water pump, timing belt and plugs in and it still wont start. I found a couple of engines, one of which is the EJ22 NOT turboed, and Im wondering if I can take the turbo off the car I ve got and just install it on the new engine. after all i really only damaged the block as far as I know. Any help you guys can give me would be of great help. Or if anyone has an engine for fairly cheap or if they know of some other problem this might be and I dont need a new engine after all, this would be a great help. Thanks guys and keep on driving.

you can't just put your turbo on the NA EJ22. But you live around IL, I may be able to take that blown engine off your hands.

It seems like you messed it up pretty bad. Just put a NA 2.2L in there, the turbo ones are really hard to find. You can check local junkyards, or try to rebuild your own. But that is going to cost a lot of money.

If you look through the conversion section, which this thread is in, the 2.2T is what a lot of people are swapping to. Its a very strong motor, but its not the cheapest thing to do. If you want a little power but less $$, get your hands on a wrecked wrx motor. Or just do the NA 2.2. Good luck.

And if you ever find out how bad your old motor is, I still may take it from you, if you dont mind shipping.

Will a wrx motor fit right in? And if I get the 2.2 NA will I need a new computer and what sort of wiring harness BS will I have to go through? Right now Im just looking at parking it till I can get some cashflow to fix it. I'll probably just get a new car in July, but I thinkIm gona resaerch as much as I possibly can and figure as much out and I may think about doing this stuff all by myself(One or two friends included when needed. hahah). So Any help along the way or any people you guys know that I could talk to and figure all this BS out with. I tried to start it again today to listen to what it sound slike. It tries to turn over then just dies out on me the longer I try and hold the starter. I'trs still getting fuel and it stgill makes a spark, it just wont catch. It also makes compression accross all the cylinders. 1-140 2-115 3-130 4-135 approx. So I'm a little confused at what it could be. I think I may just need new heads but Im not sure. Will the heads off a NA engine work on the Turbo engine or will i need to change the whole thing. TRhanks for all the help and I hope to hear from you again man. Thanks dude. Kudos. Keep on driving man ( I wish i still was hahaha, its a real fun car) CYa

Now you're starting to get way over my head. About the ecu, you will need the one off the NA, because it is just that, NA. Different engine so diff computer i believe. I think the WRX will drop in, but just do a search, im sure someones done it before.

Thanks dude, I'll do a little more searching and Ill let you know what I find out. Hopefully cus I only found one EJ22t engine in all of weastern canada and its 4,000 dollars, but its only got 46,000 klm on it! SO needless to say I want a slightly cheaper alternativ, but I may be up a creek without a pattle I think. Thanks Anthony for your help, I'll keep you posted on what I find.

i just added a turbo to my n/a 2.2 about 40k miles ago! runs great with 5 psi. and 4k rpm! it's pretty durable stock i'm finding out. i'm figuring out how to use an 2.5 sti block with 2.5rs heads in my obs-t after this 2.2 goes!
i can find a whole, running legacy turbo for less than 4k! that's robbery!

KHeff??? Did you add a STOCK turbo to the NA 2.2 or was it an aftermarket??? And if its an aftermarket where did you find one???? And this is to anybody who can answer. I want exact engines that I can put in my car( Like exact make and model I can pull an engine from....Can I put an STI engine in(dare I dream????)) without haveing to do any structural modifications and I can bolt up to my stock tranny, or should I get a new tranny anyway??? Mine right now is the Auto with manual mode. I WANT a 6-speed manual but will only probably be able to get a 5-speed. Any one who knows what sort of mods nee dto be done for that too. Thanks for all your replyies guys. Keep on Driving.

i added a stock wrx turbo and tmic to my completely stock 2.2 n/a OBS. it works good but is very limited. i can get a wrx(stock) most of the time. i think it's the displacement. if i launch, my clutch will go(again) like yesterday. but they only cost me $40, so why not play hard! this setup is o.k., not great. like a stock wrx, it's very limited!
i'm currently figuring how to use a 2.5 sti block, 2.5 n/a heads, throttle body from wrx/2.5rs/etc., and using a piggyback or similar engine management, in my obs. i was buying a wrx, but had the seller go back on his word. so if i can build it for less than 5 grand w/o any drivetrain swapping, i'm golden. that's my goal right now! let me know if i can help. my block will be picked up in two weeks!
