Wheel bearings are not unusual to go bad...but I wouldn't worry that it's gonna happen to everyone. Just listen for it and check for play in the hub(rock the tire around...it shouldn't move, except the obvious rotation). If they are close to failing...you'll hear it. Very few people had problems with the tranny unless they really modified the car. I can't think of any real significant problems. There was a TSB for many on the O2 sensor, so if the mileage is real bad...that might be why(although...they basically get the same mileage as a stock WRX anyways).

I keep hearing about this wheel bearing thing, but I'm not sure how to check it. I'm either an idiot or I'm blind because the search function isn't picking up the thread that tells me. Can anyone link me so I can have something else to worry about on my car?

It is pretty rare for a car with less than 100k to have the wheel bearings go out. It happens, but rarely.

Anyways, how many miles on the car?
The MY00 is known for the headgaskets going on them if they have been driven hard. Check the oil and coolant carefully. Look for the sticker that indicates that the owner responded to the coolant "recall" where they added a different coolant to it to try and prevent the failures. Ask if it had the failure. Regardless, there is a special warranty exception for the MY00 RS's extending HG failure coverage to 100k mi.

The O2 sensor was an issue, but the recall occurred just a few months after they hit the market. It should have had that done.

If the tranny doesn't crunch (1st and 2nd will be the offenders) don't worry about it.

Get under the car and look for repair work. Carfax will not always reveal an accident. Check all four corners and front and rear. If it has been repaired, there will be overspray somewhere that you can catch. And the area will be much cleaner than the rest of the undercarriage...

Other than that, ask all the standard questions. Request complete service records. Look for major maintenances at the correct intervals. Clutch? Brakes? This again depends on mileage...

I lost the driver's rear wheel bearing at 50k mi. on my 2000 2.5rs.

I'm currently having headgasket issues (oil leaking out of them).

Check the front seal and under the motor along the headgaskets for anything wet.
Everything under there should be dry.

i guess it really depends on what goals you want with this car. if you're going to keep it stock or a mild setup then make sure that everything is in working order. if you're going to go all out and turn it into a project then just make sure the body is in perfect shape no rust and the tranny is in good shape too. things like wheel bearings you'll have to look out for also. but the engine you don't really have to worry about since you'll going to either rebuild it or swap it out at one point or another.

Make sure of the recall done by factory. It was issued in 8/04. That was the first thing I checked for when I bought mine. Headgasket issure is good to look out for, and I'm just now hearing about the tranny issue, and wondering if I need to check mine. lol. Everything on my 00 RS runs great, and I've put on nearly 10,000 miles in the last 6 months.

Enjoy the car,

David

Check for any signs of coolant leaking... the headgaskets go bad on the RS pretty easily..

the car has 55k on it, pretty low mileage for that year. the owners says it has warranty until 60k.

thanks for all the help, i'll call and ask him tongiht if all the recalls have been done. I get to see the car in person on saturday, so i will know by then if i am getting it or not. i hope it turns out to be a good car

as for the future with this car, i need a daily driver for at lease 2-4 yrs, then me and teh bf wanna buy a crashed 04/05 sti and do a full swap into it. So i really want it to be a good daily driver for a few years.

To check for the warranty work just call Subaru and give them the VIN# and they can tell you if the recalls have been fixed or not.

If you have a buddy at a Subie dealer in the service department they can tell you about outstanding warranty work as well.

I don't drive my car hard and it's bone stock, but my HG's went at 80k miles. I'm on my second O2 sensor; mileage went from mid twenies to nearly 30 on the highway, over 25 in town (but I just replaced it and haven't been in town with the A/C running yet). Haven't had any other problems with the car that warrant mention; new rubber, etc.
