Default Warning-Torque Spec Error in Shop Manual for Cam Shaft Cap Bolts

This may be common knowledge, but I figured I'd let you folks hear about what we learned the hard way.

The shop manual calls for 14.5 ft/lbs of torque (20 N-m) for all of the cap bolts that secure the camshaft to the head. The front cap is the one that holds the camshaft oil seal and has bolts that are thinner than the other cap bolts. This torque spec is way too high for the front cap bolts. If you try to torque to this spec, you will be left with half a broken bolt in your hand and the other half lodged in the head.

The proper torque is around 8-9 ft/lbs.

You found that out the hard way I gather.
It sucks how much one little type-o can screw your whole day up.

Thanks a ton, I'll correct that in the manual when I get home. That was extremely thoughtful of you to bring it to our attention.

Fortunately, the bolt pulls apart under tension at so low a torque that none of the threads in the aluminum head get damaged. We were lucky enough that the end of the bolt in the head unscrewed with a little finesse. Thankfully it didn't get jammed in there.

So we're on a hunt for new cam cap bolts because we need to fire the motor up tonight!
