Unhappy Downpipes for Sti

i've been searching around but i quite not understand the different types of downpipes available for the sti right now. Someones say that some downpipes are longer others say the flange is different from the stock dp. The deal is that im planning on getting a custom exhaust but from the downpipe all the way back to the stock sti muffler and im putting a electric cut out right before the stock muffler so i can keep it quiet whenever i need to. Now i was thinkning about getting the exhaust and the electric cut out done before getting the downpipe but i wonder if after getting the downpipe the flange of the aftermarket one aint gonna fit the one made to fit the stock downpipe, anybody knows about the flanges types? ill apreciate the help

on a stock sti there is a 2 piece downpipe with a downpipe that has a cat and a "midpipe" which has a cat in it as well. most aftermarket DPs (HKS, invidia, helix, perrin, cobb) combine the midepipe and downpipe into one piece and call that a downpipe. the above mentioned downpipes mate to the stock cat back section no problem. im not sure about your electric cutout before the stock muffler because i dont think i understand the purpose? are you saying your gonna have a aftermarket downpipe(most likely 3 inch piping) then go into your stock catback which will taper to 2.5 inches with less smooth exhaust path into a cutout prior to the muffler? if thats the case save the cash on all that work and buy a decent cat back. i read a post that those electronic cutouts are more hassle and less proven performance.(only a 5hp gain over stock on one dyno plot i saw). mant catbacks have been proven over and over to get you between 9-15 hp...

Why would you put the cutout back by the muffler? You'll get almost no gains there. Just get a QuickTime Downpipe with the built in electric cutout and be done with it

I second that. Just get the QTP down pipe. One peice no custom work and keep your stock catback. Its what i have and recomend it to everyone.
