Default Dress code for funeral and viewing?

Well unfortunately I have to go a viewing of a friend who passed away the other night.

I know it'd be better to overdress, but I was just wondering what someone would wear to something like this. I have a suit I'd wear for the funeral but I didn't know about the viewing? Is it a more laid back thing? I haven't ever had to go to one.

Hmm, still wear the suit. Or wear something all black, it's still a mourning event.

And I'm sorry to hear about your friend.

It's okay to wear the same dark (preferably black) suit. You can switch up ties. Just probably shouldn't get something too wacky and fun.

I'm sorry that you lost a friend.

You can wear the suit, the ones I've been to suits have been fine and the norm; but I came straight from work in my work clothes (jeans and a shirt).

I was driving by a funeral home last night and there was a guy going in with jeans and a black polo shirt.

THAT would be under-dressed.

Not at all. Viewings are informal. Family members will be dressed formally, but visitors need not overdress. I usually wear khakis and a button down to a viewing. I have also attended a viewing in jeans and a polo shirt (lunch hour from work).

A viewing is a time to pay your respects to the family. People take time out of their busy days to make a viewing. How you dress is not important. Being there is what is important.

Funerals... suit, any color (except white or bright, obnoxious rapper style suits).
