Default Does the 04 FXT have a Black Box?

Can anyone tell me if the 04 FXT got the black box spyware installed. Or is it the 05 LGT only?

Yes, all new cars sold in this country since the late 90s have the ability to save data.

^ If this is true, then what kind of things out there can disable data saving?

Correct. I haven't read about the GT's black box, but the ECM on all cars have some ability to save data. If your engine blows and you were going 120 and tell the dealer you were going 55, they can easily find out you were going 120.

Not entirely.

If the ECM throws a trouble code then it will store the vehicles information in the system at that time.

Examples of freezeframe data would be

Engine RPM
Vehicle speed
Coolant temperature
Throttle opening angle
etc.....

However with the new SSM3 we have access to several minutes of vehicle operation, however the current ecm's do not support this function. There are many features on the new SSM3 that the ecm's do not support so look for dealers to have the ability to get alot more data in the near future.

Here's the list of blackbox cars (mostly 2004, some 2005), as far as "data logging" is concerned, and not just ECUs--GMs are the worst (but then again, they appear to have a commercial interest in the blackbox company, so it benefits them to push BBs to NHTSA and IISH etc.)
