Default Is it dead?

Ok here is my situation. I am prepared for the worst (new motor).
Driving today normal speeds I start to hear a faint knock, turn down radio listen to try to figure where it was coming from. Well it got louder and definitly from the engine and then engine started to die/ sputter. Pulled off called a flat bed. Home full oil no check engine light. Loud as all hell coming from drivers side head definitly. So I pull the plugs. #2 plug is BLACK!!!!! carbon on wire the whole plug, OH and the electrode and the tip of the plug are gone! Next step replace all 4 plugs and wires use probe magnet to pull anything from #2. Just pulled a ton of carbon deposit. Put it all back to gether and i am still knocking.

So any ideas? Bent valve bottom end shot, etc. What is a new motor with install? Any used ones out there?

Oh I have a 2001 RS with 90,000 on it.

Sounds like the plug electrode came off and hurt the exhaust valve. Get her to a mechanic. I do not think a new engine is in order though. Tear the top end apart, I think you will find the problem.

Could very well be a broken timing belt or jumped belt. That would mean a major top end rebuild.

I'd Like to see the results of a compression test.

How long has it been since you changed plugs?

You should also check your oil pressure with a mechanical guage.

You said you put it all back together, did you re-use that crappy plug?

Fingers crossed for you.

would love to WRX swap but the best part is I am betwee jobs at the moment and this really does not help.

If some one can help with posting the picture i snapped one of the plug, and sure did not re use it replaced all 4 wires and plugs been about 18 months since did all of them last by the way. Oil is fine checked dip stick and have an oil gauge on the pillar. Bottom is also dry as a bone.

Car when it runs now sounds like a rattle can, but still also sounds good you know the exhaust note is still there and all. Also pops right off.
