never had a problem going into 3rd. do you have a short shifter installed?

so long as you didn't let the rpms go over the redline when you put it into 1rst your car is fine.

If you are going from 2nd to 3rd (or 4th to 3rd) just push the shifter forward without any pressure to either side. The shifter springs will push it into the middle as it goes through neutral and it should go right into 3rd.

It's not a gate lock. If you double clutch, unless there's something seriously wrong with your transmission, you can get into first. If I just try pushing it in, it won't go into first unless I'm at under 5mph, but if I double clutch, I can get it in at 30mph. Yes, I've done it. Don't ask why

For Subarus it's just tough to get into 1st gear while moving, period.

And I can shift into 3rd just fine, sometimes 2nd gear is a bit stubborn and doesn't want to let go, but the shift itself works out perfectly. sometimes i accidentally mishift into 5th, but i quickly correct it by clutching and bringing it back to 3rd...rather annoying actually.

Yeah its because of the synchros. and how far spaced 1st is from some of the other gears.

On my car I find 3rd gear the easyest to get into. I have seen alot of people i prolly shouldn't have let drive my car go from 2nd to 5th, but 2nd to 1st on an up shift or 4th to first on downshift i really don't think my car would in a million years let me go in that gear without something breaking into lots of pieces.

1st is super hard for me to get into. if you didn't hear anything snapping, grinding, rattling or exploding, then i would imagine you didn't hurt the car too much.

as a general rule of thumb, don't force the car into gear. if it doesn't want to go into 1st gear, you probably shouldn't fight the car.

A few weeks ago, while I was in stop & go traffic, my 2-3 shifting got all funny and felt wrong.

I had pretty much taken it as a sign of impending failure and time to upgrade to a STi 6mt tranny when I looked down and discovered my wallet had fallen from the center tray into the leather shift boot and was physically preventing the shifter from going all the way into 3rd.

Took the wallet out of the way, and it's good as new even with 74,000 miles on the tranny.

When I first got my old WRX wagon, I thought something was wrong 'cause it wouldn't go into first whenever I wanted. When I went and spoke with one of the dealership's mechanics, he said that it is not a good idea to put it in first unless you are basically crawling or stopped (preferably) becuase putting it in 1st actually stops all the other gears. Does not seem to be the case with the STi. Any confirmation or denial of this is welcome.

Really? I think 2-3 upshifts are pretty easy. Just cup the shifter in my hand and push straight up, probably one of my fastest shifts other than 3-4.

Never had the problem with my WRX, but let me tell you a little story about my S2000...

The S2K is known for its extremely close transmission, 6mm between each gear (side to side) to be exact, and 1st gear over-revs are almost common.

Anyway, I took a trip up to Columbia Missouri to see one of my favorite guitarists, Eric Gales, and afterward I had him sign the front of my guitar (which happened to be in the trunk of my S2K). Anyway, he was fully lit, I mean bigtime, but we were out in the middle of nowhere and I asked him if he wanted to drive the S since he was going on and on about it. To make a long story short, he drove it fine, but I gave him the green light to get on it a little bit, and when he went to shift to 3rd, he put in in 1st. Thankfully nothing bad happened (it's a Honda after all), and all was well, but man, I was sweatin' it there for a second...lol.

Dont worry I did the same thing when I was learning how to drive stick,I would hit the lil spot in between the gears, then be like ahh where is 3rd!! then id just put it 4th, then push up to 3rd.

I've never missed a shift in the subie (yet), and do have some trouble getting into first and reverse at times. I've noticed that by double clutching in first or even lightly letting out the clutch when attempting reverse will allow for it to slide right in, just like butter.

When I was first learning to drive a clutch, I learned on what was then my father's 911S. Got on the freeway and shifted from 1st to 2nd, to 1st, redlining the previous 2 gears. Thank God for the rev limiter, or I would have certainly blown the engine.

Mom went from 2nd to 5th on the freeway in my WRX. That was pretty funny.

the very reason why i don't let anybody but me and other Subie drivers to drive my car.

one time she had to drive the car, and she didn't know i had a short shifter lever installed. she thought my car was broken and that i should get it fixed.

Doesn't a rev limiter limit the revs by retarding the fuel injection? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the rev limiter can't do anything to stop a mechanical problem, like misshifting into 1st.

^^Correct; the rev-limiter will not save your engine from a bad shift. You just have to put the clutch back in fast.

This is caused by pushing the shifter left or right as you shift. Just let the springs do their job.
