Thumbs up Ken and Ed, I Just picked up the new Forester

Ken and Ed-- Thanks again for your comments! They helped and were appreciated ...I've just driven it to work from the dealership and haven't had the chance to evaluate it too much yet. One thing that was obvious was a rattle that was coming from the speaker in the left door panel located next to the mirror control. The salesman said he'd schedule an appointment to have the service department look at it but I was going to try to fool around with it myself. Do either of you know if the speaker grill will just pry off or do I have to access it from the inside? I'm assuming it will just pop off but I hate to start prying it off and damage something.

I'll probably have a bunch of other questions once I have the chance to drive it some more. Thanks for your offers to answer any questions a "subie newbie" such as myself may have!

If it's the tweeter grille right in front of the door handle, then look for a little notch towards the front, you just get a small screwdriver and gently pry it off. If it's the BIG grille (6 1/2 inch speaker) then feel on the bottom of the panel for a large notch. Grab that nothc with the tips of your fingers and pop it off. The rattle could be the tweeter clip that has popped off and is bouncing around.

Thumbs up

'rocco,

Congrats, man! Welcome to the club.

Just try Vixx's recommendation and open the speaker grille yourself and check it out.

Keep us updated on your new ownership experience.

Default Thanks!

Vixx-- Thank you for your response! Yes, it is the tweeter. I pried off the grill and the tweeter assembly appears to be securely fastened in place. The rattle seems to be coming from inside the speaker (tweeter) itself. What is the "clip" you are referring to?

Ken-- so-far-so-good. I'm impressed with the quiet idle. My other car is a 5-month old Audi A4 so I'm kind of spoiled. The Audi is just a bit more refined in its construction and materials so I'm probably not as excited about the Forester as I might have been had I not had the Audi. Not to say that I'm necessarily disappointed in the Forester but I do have some concerns which I'll try to get over to Edmunds to post when I have the time. Thanks again, Ken!

There's a wire harness clip that is "clipped" into the door panel behind the tweeter grille. I thought maybe it was loose, but prolly not if the wire is firm....dunno what else it might be...*shrug*

If the rattling is comming from the tweeter itself, it is probably blown. Probably an easy thing to accomplish. Have the dealer swap it with another and see if it still rattles. Those tweeters only cost (the dealer) a couple of dollars each.

Cool Congrats, 'rocco!

Loking forward to hearing more about your ownership experience. There have been a few unhappy campers but the overwhelming majority of Forester owners really like their cars. I think a good part of that comes from having realistic expectations of the Forester. It's not gonna be as luxurious as an Audi, as tall as an Xterra or other conventional SUV (or CR-V or RAV4 for that matter) nor as capable off-road as that Xterra or a Jeep product. What it will do is be better on-road than all the latter and the price and reliability may mean you'll use it while the Audi's in the shop.

That being said, I'm a bit surprised your tweeter's blown (if it has) so soon - then again I think I may have blown the speaker in the lower RF door - these OEM speakers, even the upgraded ones, aren't the best. I'm planning on looking at Crutchfield one of these days - check with Ken 'cause I think he did the same.

Good luck,
Ed

Default Thanks again!

FP and Ed-- Thanks for your suggestions! Yeah, I'll keep checking this problem out. I too someday want to upgrade all of the speakers anyway.

Ed, lmao @ your comment about using the Forester while the Audi is in the shop. But how true that probably is! I'm sure the Forester will be much more reliable than the Audi but I'm hoping that neither of them will spend too much time in the shop. *crosses fingers* Thanks again, Ed!

Thumbs up

I upgraded my speakers even though I had purchased the "Premium" sound system. I swapped the rears out for some Polk 501a and the fronts for some Sony Xplods -- noticeable difference. The "premium" speakers are still pretty laughable in quality. The fronts were two-way, but the rears are these cheapo paper speakers with whizzer cones.
