Default 2001 Legacy L - Hello!

Hi everyone. I will be picking up a 2001 Legacy L 5-speed wagon next week so I am excited My Impreza has served me well, but my passion for cycling and my work related duties have dictated that a wagon is more practical for me....plus I can sleep in it if I have to

Of course, I have to set it apart somehow from the other wagons, so I come to you! It will need tires soon, so I will be sourcing out some WRX/RS rims with tires within a few months. I have also used our great forum search function and visited some online vendors with limited success, so I am really unsure of what is really out there for the wagon as far as aftermarket is concerned.

Are there any threads of importance that a Legacy n00b like myself should read?

Thanks guys, see you around!
Kevin

Kevin, what color is your wagon? Depending on color that is exactly what I have (2001 Legacy Wagon, mine is white). I've done a fair bit and there is definitely more available. I haven't done much for power as I'm planning to either trade in on an STi or new Legacy Turbo or Forester Turbo, OR do an engine swap. But I've had a lot of fun with the handling of the car.
Breakdown of parts:
2004 STi 17x7.5 wheels with 225/45 Falken Azenis Sports
FHI 4 piston brakes in front
upgrade from drums to Legacy Discs in rear
Porterfield R4S pads all around
Good ridge SS brake lines
Brembo slotted rotors
H&R springs
KYB GR2 struts
Whiteline ALK
Whiteline front sway bar
Whiteline adjustable rear bar
STi Grp N Engine and Tranny Mounts
STi short shift linkage with TWM short shifter, sotck shift knob
Cusco K.O. front strut tower bar (useless but got it dirt cheap, so why not).
Custom fender to airbox pipe with K&N panel filter
Custom header back catless exhaust (used to have borla's but they sucked).
LGT Wing
40% tint all around
Md Player
Stripped rear interior (135lbs in weight savings)

That's about it.

I have toyed with the idea of staying N/A and getting TWE to build be a nice engine and add some EL headers. But I think swap is the way I'm leaning if I decide to keep the car.

In winter I slap some '01 RS wheels on with winters.

Kevin, I would recommend the older RS wheels if you are going to purchase stock wheels. I think the '00 and '01 RS wheels (mine are painted flat black) look pretty sharp on the legacy.

Best of luck.

if you have any questions we would all be happy to help.

Hi tora, thank you for the reply! It is wintergreen, so some of those 00-01 RS wheels should look just fine on it I think.

Your mod list is really helpful to me so thank you for posting it. Any pictures? I think I will defintely go with an upgraded rear sway bar ASAP since I really enjoyed the upgrade on my Impreza. If I read correctly, I find it interesting that you had drums on the rear...maybe it is a Canadian thing. The one I am picking up has disc brakes at all 4 corners. Have you played around with different lubricants or are you using normal stuff? I am sure I will have more questions

Thank you for your time!

Kevin, I do have a few pictures which I can e-mail if you want, but my car is nothing much to look at. To be honest I am pretty simplistic when it comes to the looks. As for fluids I use Motul for everything (brakes, tranny, rear diff and engine oil). I've always been happy with it and never had a problem.
Rear sway bar and engine/tranny mounts were two of my favorite mods.
As for the brakes mine was actually a Brighton, but it came with all the things an L had as a special edition Brighton, except DISCS.

Do you like your stock grille?!? There are other stock grilles and other aftermarket grilles available (my outback grille was ugly, so I bought the 35th anniversary legacy grille that was very racecar looking). Also, there are fiberglass, carbon fiber, or the baja steal hoods that all have the scoop on it. And I suggest you debadge the car and remove all stickers to make it cleaner and smoother looking...

But make sure you leave the AWD badge or sticker so when it gets towed and they wreck your transmission, it isn't your fault. The other thing that I've been thinking about is adding an Unlimited Badge too.

I've got the '05 WRX rims on my '00 L (sedan), and I think they look pretty hot for the dollar...

I keep thinking that I should Upgrade to a VDC Outback Sedan. Except that I can't afford it with everything else that I want to do.

Advantages:
VDC
Lmt Slip Diff.
Stereo
Speakers
Wheels
Ground Clearance
H6
Side Air Bags
Heated Seats
Interior colour
Sunroof
cool steering wheel

Disadvantages

Slightly limited headroom
Have to paint it a monotone
Price

Price is the sticking point.

I can get one with a warranty and buy an extended warranty (6 month) for it for C$3000+$1700more for the 2 year extention or I can get one without any warranty. For that much less. C$4700 = ~US$3750. the Cheaper of the two would cost about C$5-6000 (US$4-4800) more than what I would get on a trade in for my L. Both would need to be painted Red and the cheaper one would need a rear Spoiler / wing. About another C$1000 (US$800).

The other things I want are a DVD SACD changer 400 disc, a new HDTV Projector and 100" Screen and I need a new powersupply 500watt for my PC. I would then pop my current non HD projector into my bedroom with my 84" screen. Also looking at a DVD nav unit for my car and Upgrade speakers and sub & a new cell phone either a Sony Ericsson 910 or 610 and a palm top mini notebook.

Now I know I'm going to get the 400 disc changer anyway eventually and the 500 watt Powersupply. And a DVD burner and a new phone.

But can I afford a VDC too?

diabolical1 CC-i have a H6 drivetrain available with wiring if you are interested its really a straight forward swap wiring wise on a BE, i basically had it all laid out for my car but then decided to be dumb and go with the EZ30R which is a lot more complicated.

I thought about doing that, but for the price found that it would be cheaper and easier to just buy a used Outback VDC Sedan and have it painted.

Plus I would still want to get side air bags, heated seats and ltd. slip diff put in. I also always worry I'm going to high centre when I drive off road.

I also thought about getting a Turbo for my L, but then I would need new better brakes which whould mean new bigger rims etc...

Then I consider that I put twice the mileage on my exercise bike in a year than my Legacy, and I just wonder if I should do anything car wise at all.

Add to it that I can upgrade my Projector for US$1000 right now, limited time special, brand new and another US$150 for a new Glass bead screen. For almost nothing I can resetup my bedroom with my old system 84" projector and DVD/SACD...although I'm also looking at a location free tv system.

I think I will wait another year and then start looking for either a 2003 2004 VDC sedan or a used 2005 GT.

Well, day 3 of having the wagon and I am lovin' it I will try and post pictures sometime soon.

Tora: Thank you for posting pictures...I really like it. Also, I searched for stereo installation and came across a older post of yours describing how to take the dash apart...very helpful! Those two screws in the ashtray were a small pain.

Omaha: Nice looking Legacy! If I have any questions I will be sure to ask.

I also like Omahas, glad some old posts were of help. Like Omaha I will soon be doing the lighter turbo hood in preparation for an engine swap. I'm also pondering doing a light N/A build until I gather all my turbo pieces then just sell off the N/A stuff when I do get it. I'm thinking cams, EL headers, and possibly the perfectpower ECU from Rallitek...we'll see how the SubieSport guys like it after some testing. I'll post new pics when I get my hood.
