Question help me put things in perspective

I'm seriously considering paying for a first class plane ticket.

Is that just wrong?

My Dad works for an airline. I didn't know there was anything other than first or business class.

no, it's an extra $400 for a two hour trip

I'm just wondering if that's being ostentatious.

If it's a flight from Houston to Austin, yes, that's silly.

Houston to Melbourne, or maybe Tokyo, that'd be worth it!

If you have that much money to spend, do it. Personally I can sit just fine in a couch seat and would much rather spend the 400 bucks on rent for a month.

how long of a trip?

don't do it for the food or booze or entertainment. on all but the longest flights, the entertainment choices are basically the same. as for the food, you just get reheated fancy trash on real plates.

any domestic flight can be done in coach. trans-atlantic would be a stretch but it can be done in coach as well. trans-pacific or south america? you'll thank yourself for the extra room and paying business or first is worth it just for that.

edit: destination came in as i was writing. no need for first class at all.

If it was transoceanic i doubt it'd be just an extra $400.

It's a two hour flight

so figure, on the plane, you're in there at least an extra hour each way, boarding and such, so that's about $67 per hour to go first class

free beer each way, probably about $20 or so

that makes it under $60 an hour to not be in hell for 6 hours

I think you're pretty much insane. It's only two hours - big deal - enjoy your pretzels, have a Dr. Pepper, and be smug about the 400 bucks you didn't spend!

If you're feeling crazy, spend five bucks on a scotch and soda!

That's not worth it in my book. Couch is not that bad, its not hell, it just isn't as roomy as you would like. Maybe if you're a huge guy (300+) it might be an issue, but last time I was on a flight I was fine.

are you 6'2" and 250?

if not, imagine that everything around you is 10% smaller

then imagine being in an airplane seat

imagine the 12 year old kid in front of you reclining and then proceeding to bounce as hard as he can, in the seat for two hours

I'm 6' and 180, so no. If it annoys you that much, get the first class seats, but I feel it is a waste of money.

Request a bulkhead seat. Problem solved (except for the seat size).

The airlines love people like you.

$400 buys a pretty nice hooker.

i'm 6'3 and 170 and don't deal well with coach seats. my shoulders are too broad and my legs too long. i flew coach anyway 3/4 the time. i have 100,000+ miles banked up though, so on longer flights i'll splurge on an upgrade.

grant

edit: have flown to austrailia and back both first class and coach, as well as all over europe, asia and africa. its not worth extra money in my book, but if you have miles banked up its very well worth splurging... but i wouldn't on anything but an international flight.
