Default The Invisible CAI

I put a PDM Racing CAI on my 04 OBS some time ago. Please take note of where the intake enters the fender.

Although the CAI had a large diameter, the intake was reduced to the stock size where it coupled to the stock airbox. I removed it because it was quite loud and really didn't seem to do much for me. I still wanted cold air, though.

Enter the invisible CAI. This is the stock muffler box that covers the hole noted above:

I removed the fender liner inside the wheel well and, using a white crayon, used the hole in the fender as a template to draw a circle on the side of the muffler box. I removed the box and used a dremel to cut a hole in the side of the box. I then opened the box and enlarged an internal tube so that the airflow to the airbox would not be restricted inside the muffler box. I put some foam weatherstripping around the hole in the fender and re-installed the box. The black "tube" coming off the front of the box has an opening in the bottom for the air intake. I sprayed some expanding foam insulation in it to plug the hole.

If you look closely at the back left corner of the box in this picture, you can see the foam weatherstripping. Virtually invisible, almost free and as good as either the PDM Racing or Ganzflow CAIs. I also plugged the other hole in the fender with the $3 Subaru cover.

So now I have a true cold air inlet and its as quiet as stock.
