Question Upgrading

Last year I bought an 04 baja sport because I couldn't afford the turbo model. I really enjoy my baja but I just wish it had more power. What are my options to put some pony's under the hood?

Thats about it until you start swapping cams and taking steps to raise compression etc.

I dont know if you have a 5 speed or an auto. You could add a lighter flywheel and some lighter pullies to make it alittle more responsive if you want.

Its going to be alittle difficult to get a lot of power out of that engine, but you should be able to liven it up a bit and make it alittle more fun.

I did the following to mine and noticed better throttle response/power gains,
so Unless you want to spend big money for small gains with an expensive poor fitting CAI do this:
1.Remove baffle in front of grill blocking engine cold air inlet to allow a bit of ram effect
2.remove all the water drain jugs hanging on the inlet pipe except the last smallest one and cap off all the openings.
3.Grind out all the baffles in air cleaner housing
4.Install K&N filter

You will hear a lot louder air inlet noise when going WOT now also...

5.Replace spark plugs with NGK irridium
6.Replace plug wires with Magnecores

Get rid of excess weight too, I pulled off the roof crossbars and removed the bed extender and all the floor mats( I hate mats anyhow) If you're daring get rid of the spare tire/jack too and just carry a plug kit and a can of fix a flat for around town driving. This sheds around 100 pounds. Go one step further and only fill the gas tank 1/2 way, that will keep you down about another 48 pounds. Finally put the tire pressure at the max, less rolling resistance.

I know, it's all little crap, but all added up I'll bet it equates to about a 25 HP gain with the weight reduction figured in. That's a pretty big 15% gain for little money.

Too bad I didn't bother to get a before and after at the track(I only live 10 minutes away from the drag strip) but I've done enough mods and racing over the years to know that I can feel meaningful gains. The motor now revs much faster to WOT 6k shift points and feels like there's more HP.

NKG irridiums are what the turbos come with. Ive noticed my 2.5L impreza seems to run excellent on simple NGK coppers. They dont last as long, but are much cheaper and perfrom great. I don't like the champions that the later model 2.5s came with however.

Magnecore- did they fix that problem with the wires popping off over time on the 2.5l coilpack?
