Default OT: mopeds in boston, who has em??

hey guys
i am thinking about getting a scooter for boston.

its either goign to be a yamaha zuma or a aprilia rs50. i want the rs50 real bad. its basically a 50cc scooter capable of going 60+mph. 55 stock. but they have like 80cc big bore kits, etc for it..

i thought the rs50 woudl be classed as a moped cuz of engine size, however it may not be because it has a 6 speed manual. i looked online and the rmv requires a automatic transmission for mopeds.

is there any way around this? can i purchase out of state but still get a moped registration on this bike. will rmv even know??

thanks
alex

Even IF you could get it registereed as a "moped", the state requires that mopeds must not be capable of more than 25 MPH. In the unlikely event that you managed to get bagged doing 60 MPH, your moped registration could be in serious jeapordy.

IF you are serious about getting a MOPED, any moped.. you really should plan on going to a saftey school. Driving in Boston is dangerous. Driving a MOPED in Boston is nearly suicide unless you really know what you are doing (even then its still dangerous though).

wrong...you can be capable of going over that speed, just shouldn't. same with any other car.

going further on a RS50....i have the dirtbike equivalent, a 2002 honda XR50, i wound the stator, and added a headlight and tail lights...and yeah i added an 72cc borekit, that still has the "49cc" stamp on the outside for legality reasons i guess..
but being in the suburbs has it's benifits and drawback with 50's, at first local law didn't like them, but once hearing of the legality of our (me and my friends) new toys, started to leave us alone.

my suggestion is going with a legit and "real" moped, one that comes with headlights and everything already. you can find them in the want ad pretty cheap often, and even cheaper if you're willing to rebuild it.

edit: i am not aware of the RS50's (honda's make) if it has a clutch or not, the way i am able to find a loophole is the XR50 is Semi-Auto, it has no clutch just click the gear shift...and yes yuou can register out of state bikes...massachusettes moped registration's are hand filled out in duplicate, and merely stamped by the RMV.

What about just getting a motorcycle? My SV650 is great for getting around the city, and it's nice to be able to park in special places (like the sidewalk in Chinatown or between spots. And my bike has gone over 55mph, too!!! (possibly twice that and without a bore kit )
