Default Audio Speaker Weirdness

I have a 2002 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS sedan. I have the following stock OEM speakers: 1 tweeter in the driver side/1 tweeter in the passenger side, 1 sub in the driver side/1 sub in the passenger side, 1 medium size speaker in the rear driver side/1 medium speaker in the rear passenger side. I have a JVC head unit.

Sometimes I notice that there is no sound coming from the front driver side or front passenger side or rear driver side or rear passenger side (in other words no sound from any one side). This includes both the sub and tweeter at the same time (where they exist). However upon increasing the volume, the side that was dead suddenly comes back to life.

I did some research looking for Technical Service Bulletins for 2002 Subaru Imprezas 2.5's and I found one that seems to fit the problem:
Quote:
Speaker Performance
Service Bulletin # 15-111-04

This bulletin describes problems some customers may have with their speaker system. Issues such as: cracking and/or popping from the front speakers, no sound from front speakers (right, left or both), no sound from all speakers, or sound distorted when increasing volume are all potential candidates for this repair bulletin.
However I can't get access to the TSB without paying, I only can see this little bit of info. I would like to read the whole TSB...

Besides the TSB, what could be the problem? Since my car isn't under warranty going to the mechanic to fix this using the TSB wouldn't be cheap.

I'm trying to fix this on the cheap so any help would be appreciated.

So what I'm asking for is how do I get the whole TSB and/or what could be the problem?

Have the mods move this thread over to the audio one. Try searching on here for that problem, if its a supposed common problem then chances are its been discussed here. If your using an aftermarket head unit, and you put it in are you sure you connected the wires securely? I experienced a problem similar in another car, sound would fade in and out, turned out just to be a wire. But searching and proper forums are your friend.

Ah. Well, it's obviously something to do with the engine then. I'd suggest putting in longer-duration cams and opening up the intake and exhaust. The problem will still be there, but you won't be able to hear it anymore.

I've got an Alpine HU and sony coaxials in my front doors. (rear speakers are removed) And at low volumes my right channel will simply stay mute until I get the volume to about 25-30%. Then it turns on and sounds fine. Sometimes if I lower the volume back down the right channel will turn off again. All the while the left channel sounds like it should.

I think my problem relates to an old amp and not the best wiring. Could also relate to the aftermarket HU.

Since it affects both speakers in the front doors it narrows it down a bit - but not much. I would check all of the wiring at the back of your stereo. To be honest, replacing the stock speakers should be job one either way if you want clear sound, but this sounds more like either loose wires or a flakey amp.

I will test the connections. I also have the original head unit and I wil plug that back in probably to see if the problem occurs with it. If it occurs with it then I know it's not the head unit. Where is the amp exactly?

Also how do I get my hands on that TSB I mentioned?

By amp, I meant the one built in to your head unit. You never mentioned an external amplifier right?

If you bought the car new and you still have the stock speakers then the only amp is in the HU as stated above.

I was just mentioning that I've had somewhat similar issues.

For TSB information you may want to post in the Sevice&Maintenance Forum.

I don't have an external amp correct it's in the head unit.

I didn't buy the car new and I would go straight to the dealer if it was still under warranty.

I will post about the TSB in the proper forum thanks.

Then I would check for crimped wires or loose contact points. Particularily behind the HU in the dash.
