Default Baja T: Project Update

Well things are coming together:

Interior:
Boost Gauge
Installed this on fathers day. Picture is at idle and it goes to about 3 ticks past the .05 mark at full boost, equals 11.6 psi.

I connected to the dash lighting wire & a ground but the light does not adjust with the dash light, is that correct?

Recaro Seats
I am waiting on brackets from Recaro, hopefully this week

Performance
Suspension/Wheels
ION Performance springs are here, I am waiting on TireRack to deliver the GR2s
18" Forester STI wheels should be enroute

Exhaust
Xceleration TBE setup: suppose to ship out at the end of the week, I've got an extra turbo to downpipe gasket ready.

Not sure about the turbo, might do the VF39/TMIC from the STI for the full on Baja STI or possibly a different turbo. We'll see how the wife reacts after the exhaust and wheels arrive. I'd like to hit the dyno for before/after runs but not sure if I'll have a few hours during the week to mess around.

There is a Trackmasters event at Watkins Glen in early October, if I get the suspension sorted and possibly brakes, I may make the trip and see how the Baja feels on the track.

i have the same boost gauge: i rarely more than two ticks past .05 (.07) ...sometimes in 5th i will see .075. I never noticed if it dimmed with the dash light, just that its white where the rest is green.

Rest looks great, im jealous!

Very easy to install this one! If you can take apart a dash to install a radio, you are set.

10.1 to 11.6psi range looks to be the my stock pressure -- the needle looked as if it has gone to .08 but it is probably maxed at .075

If the conversion to PSI is correct:

.07 = 10.1 psi
.075 = 10.8 psi
.08 = 11.6 psi

The GR2s finally arrived yesterday, now I need to find a place that will install and do an alignment without charging an arm and a leg.

Let us know how the GR2s do on your B. I am wondering about them myself.

I'll bite and ask... Why is your hand in a cast?

Oopsie, that sounds painful. I should look around and see if I have pictures from the micro-surgery I had on my had from smashing a glass. Needless to say the nerves in my finger have slowly been coming back to normal.

I should have snapped a picture but at the time I wasn't 100% sure if it was dislocated or broken and really didn't feel like posing

18" STI Rims are on. I can't wait to get the ION lowering springs on next Friday!! These picts are after just a few miles of driving, I think it will settle a tad more.

I went with a 225/45/18, stock size on the Forester STI and the speedo reads a hair fast. Turning at full lock there is no rubbing.

I'm looking at an 04 Baja Turbo, and I have a quick question. Do you know if the suspension is swappable with a WRX? I have what's left of the Tein basic coilovers from my wrecked WRX and I wonder if it'll straight swap or if I need an entirely new suspension.

Thanks!

I doubt it. The Baja is built off the legacy/outback platform. You mihgt have a better time finding out if the WRX pieces fit on an outback and it'll most likely work with the Baja if it does.

adding the OEM Baja seat belt clip to after market seat frame:
7/16" x 20 nut is needed to mount the seat belt clip bracket to the Wedge Engineering after market seat frame.

I got mine from Fairfax Auto Parts, they only had a Grade 5, I would have preferred Grade 8 but these nuts with the factory bolt should be ok in the event of an accident

STI TMIC is on the way.

I need to track down a VF39 turbo to round out the STI conversion. Then it will be time for a little ECU tuning on the dyno.

One in, one to go and some wiring:

and then once I resolve mounting the STI BOV I'll install the TMIC, just a little bigger

02_Forester - Your Baja is one Hot Beauty ! I have owned 2 red cars, but I wasn't keen on the red until now. It looks great.

I appreciate your tip on the Mach shop as I am in Fairfax myself.

I think if I got the red, I would consider putting on some gaudy gold 17 inch wheels. So my question is - you put 18's on, would that mean that 17 would definitely fit with no problem ?

Yes, 17s are ideal -- Nelly has the '05 17" Outback XT on his Baja and there are a couple of others that have 17s also.

yes!! I finally have generous head room or I can raise it up to not have enough.

Definately enough room for a helmet now. ( I'm 6' 2" ) Its not that the stock seats or even the '04 WRX seats were too high, there were just tight for me and I wanted more room.

Those seats look GREAT! After a road trip from MD to KC over the Fourth of July weekend, I absolutely hate the stock seats - my a$$ still hurts! I've been eyeing Recaros for some time - I know you posted previously - but who did you end up ordering them from and how long did it take. Your Baja is really looking sharp!

The vendor I ordered from has since lost the Recaro dealership. Swing by Recaro's website for the official list of vendors -- I ended up dealing directly with Recaro North America and they were fantastic. Speedware Motorsports is a Recaro dealer and they currently have a set of Recaro Speeds on their clearance page: http://www.speedwaremotorsports.com/specials/index.asp Those would look good in a Baja

In all honesty, if you don't need additional headroom and can find a set of '04 WRX or '05 WRX with heat, those would be my recommendation. I found my '04 WRX seats very comfortable and they fit me really well. Swing by the dealer and sit in a new WRX to get an idea, then contact some salvage yards or look in the NASIOC classifieds. The Recaros are definately great seats, the cooling feature really does work, if you have the budget, they are a fantastic option.

The particular seat bracket I got was a Sparco 400SB bracket made by Speedware Motorsports ( I just found this out today )
