Default Wheel Bearing Woes…

I’m having a heck of a problem with a wheel bearing and could use some advice. I got a toasted wheel bearing in the front and decided to reduce some of the labor costs of getting it fixed by doing the disassembly work myself.

So I pull the knuckle and hub assembly with the bad bearing and take it down to my local stealership asking if they’d press the old bearing and seals out and install new ones. To my surprise they won’t do it due to “liability concerns” unless I bring the entire vehicle in.

So I say F-this and head on over to the parts counter to buy the inner/outer seals and bearing pack. I then head over to a reputable aftermarket automotive shop in my area, who’s popular with Subarus, and leave the parts with them for several hours. To my surprise, they say they can’t do it! Something about they need to use a hub puller to get the hub out of the knuckle which would obviously require it be installed on the car!

I have a bearing press but not the right size adapters to press the hub out. What a joke… What am I to do? If I’m not mistaken the hub is pressed into the bearing pack, then the assembled unit is pressed into the front of the knuckle, right? What does this have to do with a hub puller? Wouldn't you just press the bearing pack assembly back out from the rear of the knuckle?

The wheel bearings are a serious bitch.

I heated mine up with a torch and then slammed the hell out of it with a sluggo and a large 5 pound section of round bronze. Took me over an hour to get it out.
