Background on my set up
2000 Outback Legacy Limited 2.5 NA engine. Recently did the catback mod 2.25" midpipe no resonator through a 2.25" out muffler. stock cats would addign the borla header lower my torque and lessen my 0-40 acceleration? any input would be appreciated.

actually it would do the opposite. The torque would be increased slightly, which would would imply that the acceleration would increase. The gains are reportedly minimal and I'm sure many will chime in and tell you not to get it and to instead spend SEVERAL hundred more on Equal Length headers. I have the Borlas, got them used for $100, and I'm happy with them. NO WAY am I going to spend $800 for headers.
Anyways, it will provide some gains for you car. Jared |

yeah, do equal length headers...BIG difference in hp gains. as far as NA bolt ons are concerned. jared is right though, very expensive mod.

iirc, the borlas are equal length...i had the cobb headers and loved them. if you look at the stock exhaust manifold you'll see a crazy kink in the design, reducing a tremendous amount of flow.

The Borla's are NOT equal length. Cobb and TWE both make equal length headers. EL headers provide more power but remove the bubbly tone of the boxer engine. Cobb and TWE are much higher quality headers then the borlas, personally i would prefer the TWE, but its all disputable.

There has been a lot of great information regarding headers in the NA Forum. Omahasubaru has even provided weight comparisons of the 3 available.

like others have said, equal length for power, if you just want to say "i have headers" and have the car be louder, then get the borlas.

The thing is borlas are way cheap, TWE is 948$... I dont think its worth that much. Any other brands sponsor 00 legacy headers? Is there really a big diffrence between borlas and other brands?

There is a large difference. Like was mentioned earlier, search in the N/A forums. This topic is beat on almost weekly. The difference is around 10hp. Pretty big for a bolt on, but also, you are paying for that big time. As I said before: when it is $800+ for EL headers there is no way that I am going to pay that to add power to a car that will never truly be a race car. For that kind of money on a Turboed car you would be looking at some significant gains...That is almost 1/4 of the money needed for an WRX swap.
Are you really serious about building your car to have as much N/A power as possible? If so, the headers are a must. If not and you want it to be a little nicer to drive around town and on the highway, a used pair of Borlas will be great. .02 Jared |

if you dont want to spend the money on equal length headers, then you may as well save money and not spend any money on the borlas and keep stock.

TWE, COBB, Brullen all make/made EQ headers.
Borla and some others made non-EQ headers. IIRC, the Brullen has an issue mating up to a stock/stock like aftermarket cat back, it only works with a Brullen catback or you need to do some modding. Most of the headers add a bit of low/mid torque but also affect the "boxer rumble" but never to the point of sounding like a Honda. Early Borlas had an issue with cracking, later ones seem better, but who knows. So.....a catback is a good start, high flow cat is next followed by a header. I have and like the COBB EQ header, but I agree it is not cheap. Remember the old adage, "Speed is money, how fast do you want to go?" |
