Default Burning oil smell '05 GT Wagon

Howdy folks.

I've got about 3.5k miles on my 05 GT, and I occasionally smell a sort of hot/burning oil smell. I just had it in for it's first oil change, and had them check all the belts, seals, etc., and they found nothing wrong.

I would have bet a fair sum of money that it was the crank seal, since it's exactly the same behaviour/smell that comes along with this common leak in the EJ25 - oil dripping out of the seal onto the exhaust, but they found no leaks.

Anybody else experiencing this? I wouldn't think it was still new-car crap burning off the engine.

on my Mom's 05 LGT I've noticed that hot turbo/engine equals similar smell. I know her's isn't actually oil, as the dipstick reads full consistently.

Is it a manual? I have read that the clutch smells pretty bad.

Was it done by subaru? Is not, what type of oil was used? Has your oil level gone down?

Did the smell show up after your first oil change??? Or has it been there since you got the car? After my first oil change, I too smelt the oil for a bit, but haven't since and I am closing in 14,500 miles

Nevermind what I wrote, you had them check the smell .. doh!

I had them check for leaks during the 1st oil-change, the smell has been present since purchase - I assumed at first it was just the various protective coatings burning off, but I'd think at 3.5k miles those would be long gone.

Have they checked the rear diff? Us forester guys have the same smell that means the diff is packing it in.

the car has 3500 miles on it, it seems unlikely the diff is dying, but thanks.

Sometimes it's the wax stuff they put on the cars so that they don't rust on the boat ride over. I think it's called cosmolene (It's been known to make the same smell if they don't clean it off good enough during the PDI)

I have just taken delivery of a new Liberty(Legacy) 3.0R spec B 6 speed manual wagon in Obsidian Black.
What an absolutely fantastic car!
Anyway, I too have the burning oil smell and my Subaru technician advises that it is the wax just like wrx_driver_2002 has indicated. I have put 1,300kms(800miles) on mine it 2 weeks and the smell is still there but diminishing slightly with use.

Some foresters have died at 3k-5k. Its a factory boo boo. Don't know why but it not all of them. The smell is accompanied by a whine or noise around 2500 rpms with very light throttle.

I don't know if you've had an opportunity to compare, but clutch stink and burning engine oil stink are worlds apart. They are distinctly different odors.

I dunno exactly what a burning rear diff smells like.

hrm, interesting. I'll keep an eye on that. For now I'll assume it's the factory engine protection still burning off.

I think that stuff is cosmoline. It doesn't smell all that much but keep a look out for weird stuff accompanying the smell.
