Engine swapped?

I have a 95 legacy outback that I was told when I bought it that they had a new engine put it. The car runs great but I was just wondering is there anyway that I could verify this? Is there a vin on the engine that would be different than the vehicles vin? If so where on the engine is it?

Chris,
Take a look under the alternator for an engine type. It should be Ej22 or Ej25. Also, on the front to the timing belt cover there is a ten digit alpha numeric that starts with EJ. Post that up here. But there is no 1-1 relationship between the engine and the car without really digging. Not all the engines got a vin stamped on them. My MY00 RS did not, but the MY01 Outback engine I replaced with when I popped it does have a vin stamped on it. But this is really a mute point since you cannot see that mark with the engine in the car...
