Default 04 Sti cluster problem going back to stock 02 cluster?

I'm posting this for my friend since i'm pretty stumped as to why his car won't start. For a few months he has had an 04 sti gauge cluster w/ red defi bf gauges. He is going out of town for awhile and said i could borrow the gauges until he gets back (i have a stock cluster w/ defi v2 gauges) The other day we swapped gauges/clusters and he put his stock cluster in the car. Car doesn't want to start, it will crank and begin to start (can hear the exzhaust note) but then it just stops and won't want to start. The odd thing is that the cluster says hes out of gas (has half a tank) and when it is about to start the speedo will jump up to about 20mph then come back down to 0. We then put his cluster in my car and it runs perfect. Then we put the 04 sti gauge cluster back in his car and it reads the gas correctly and runs normal.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? We cut the one yellow wire w/ green stripe on his middle connector but i don't see how this would cause anything since i also cut mine so the radio fuse doesnt blow with the 04 cluster. Another thing to note is his stock cluster has 66k on it and the 04 sti one has 30k, not sure if that matters for anything. And one last part of info, with the stock cluster in sometimes the fuel pump won't prime and when looking at the fuel return line it will every so often make a clicking sound. What could be up with his car that the stock cluster wont let it start but then it works fine in my car?
