Default I'm thinking I may be getting laid off...

Well today Bank of America bought out MBNA and said they will be eliminating 6000 jobs.

There are only 28000 employees at MBNA....so getting rid of 6k wow.

Also I'm a part-time employee, so I think I'd have a greater chance of being released.

This sucks.

Part-time makes it tough. I'd try to make myself indispensable, and with a totally positive attitude about the re-organization process. If they don't flat-out see you as a flexible asset, they may at least come to like you so much they don't have the heart to let you go.

Now that I think about it, being a part-timer might just save you. They'll save more money eliminating full-timers.

The articles I read said they plan on saving over 780 million by 2007 from wages and technology saved.

I've been one of the top performers in my dept since I started. I'm hoping they will just go through and fire all the people who suck at their jobs. That and give us all raises...but I dunno.

Just remember....I've been through, and survived, at least 4 re-organizations I can count at the moment. Forget about your past performance. Everything now is about attitude, and showing them that you are on-board with them and will be loyal to the new entity, not vengeful of the buyout or changes. Thrive on change.

2 part-time employees with no benifits may be cheaper than one full-time employee with benifits. You may still have a job.

For being part time we still get paid well.

Start at 12/hr. I make 14/hr plus bonuses.

As a college student I don't see myself making much more than that anywhere else.

That'd be nice...but I'll lay odds that no one from the new owner is going to be ever coming into contact with him before they let the axe fall. He has no one to really "shine" to. His boss is probably just as worried about losing their job as half-baked.

Most likely, with those kinds of numbers, they plan on eliminating entire departments. Sure, they may shave a few people here and there, but mostly, they probably plan on taking the responsibilities of several groups and re-assigning those chores to other BoA divisions. The only people who will get shuffled around will be higher up than him.

So, keep working hard, just in case your group survives, so you can keep your reputation....but realize you have little to no control over your future there...and it'd probably be a smart idea to at least start investigating some other options so you aren't completely caught off-guard if the worst does happen(i.e. get your resume prepared this weekend and start looking up info on any other companies that may be hiring in your area).

Thanks for the advice.

I also think they will go in and eliminate entire depts.

Before we had to shut down a site and they fired everyone part-time and gave the full-time people new oppurtunities.

I've been with BofA for 6 years, and I've had nothing but excellent service from them.

MBNA has crappy rates anyways.

If you want to get a credit card with good rates MBNA wasn't the way to go anyways.

It usually takes close to a year for a merger of this size to complete.
