Between the subject line and the part about 4.5" never looking so big, one could really read this thread wrong, if you know what I mean!

I've got a 4.5" tip on my exhaust. Doesn't look too weird...

I'm surprised it doesn't scrape the ground when you hit a bump. How far off the ground is the bottom of the canister?

It will never touch the ground. Honestly the mid-pipe portion where it clears the rear axle would touch before the can. I’m running WRX struts with 1” lowered springs in the rear and Whiteline controls (1.5”) in the front. The exhaust has never rubbed ground. The front bumper cover on the other hand drags on steep driveways.
Not to highjack, but here’s another pic of the cans clearance with stock suspension. PIC |

Yeah, I thought about how you could look at this and think something way different from what I'm really talking about. I guess I for the the key words axel back. For being 4.5 inches it isn't that loud which is a good thing. It sounds more like a V8 than a Honda.

That's a big tip. You're starting to get into coffee can territory there. I myself am not into anything that large, but if you like it, then it's all good. Plus, you can tell girls that your tip is 4.5" wide.

Honestly, if I had an NA motor I wouldn’t go with piping this large. There really isn’t any benefit, right? For me, I’m running a boosted motor therefore the larger diameter and higher flow from a catless turbo-back exhaust, the less back pressure resulting in reduced turbo lag. Backpressure with turbos is a bad thing as it slows the turbo exhaust wheel at spin-up. This is why so many WRX owners run 3” high flow cans…
As for the coffee can, I’m not into it either. This is why my can is black stainless and shoved up pretty high to make it less noticeable. But then again it’s not about the bing, it’s about the performance… |

I dont like the coffee cans either. I also bought this for the performance. I figure I should get everything on my car before I do the motor swap. I can feel a little difference in the power but nothing huge. Supposedly this is the best exhaust for a turbo legacy so I'm hoping when I get my new engine this exhaust will help alot. Another reason I got this tip was because I dont like the stromung brullen or borla tips, they look too much like stock.
Xcntrk, did you have to cut your bumper to fit the tip? I think I'm gonna have to cut mine but if there's another way to fit the tip up there I want to know before I go cutting things. |

Yeah I’d like to see some pics of this sucker installed too… ![]() As for the trimming, on my GT there’s some of the lower cowling trim (below the rear bumper cover) that I trimmed a little. Nothing more then plastic which was notched with a dremel. I only did this to really get the pipe sucked up in there. |

I've seen dozens of WRXs and 2.5RSs running similar exhausts, some with even bigger cans, and many of them lowered 1"+ without any problems.LegacySTI, do you have any pics from directly behind, like what xcntrk75 posted? Pat |

I would have bent the mounting arms a bit, instead of cutting the bumper. But it looks nice.

I just was looking for something farther back, from normal viewing height, if you know what I mean. No biggie, just curious.

here's a pic of the tip that the previous owner put on the Borla muffler....old pic, but the muffler is still on the car. the back of it lines up with the edge of the bumper.
![]() its about the same size if not larger. There's an even 1/8" space in the original rear skirt muffler cut-out around the tip. I like how it fills it out, instead of a dinky little tailpipe lost in the gaping hole. yeah, I would have bent the arms as well, to avoid trimming the bumper too. GGT |
