Honestly, I don't know much about piggybacks or stand-alone ECUs. I would go with the crank pulley before the S-afc. You can just bolt and unbolt the pulley where as you may have to solder and then tune the s-afc.

Definitely go with bolt-ons until you have a good amount, then get a s-afc and tune the vehicle to your liking.
My $0.02. GL!

do you have an intake/exhaust?? If you don't have those things then the S-AFC would be a bit of a waste at this point. Buy the pulley, get an intake/exhaust and then the S-AFC to take advantage of all the other mods.

PS: look on ebay for the pulley. New from Mr. Josh for less than his site, sometimes.

I drive an automatic 96 Impreza L Coupe with the 2.2 L motor with the following mods:

STi Rear Sway Bar... soon to be a Whiteline Adjustable Rear Sway Bar
2.5in midpipe with STi axleback exhaust
Fram Intake Panal Thingy (came with the car when I bought it)

That's all right now performance wise...

Do the pulley first... either Josh's or you can get a full set from pro-ecm... personally I'd skip the safc and get something like the Perfect Power... not too much more money but basically full management for every mod you'd ever want to do save increasing the redline.
