It is an IHI RHB5 in either VF10 or VF11 trim (I'm not sure whether the final word on which car specs came with which trim turbo ever got decided). It is both water and oil cooled. It's a bit smaller than the TD04 (stock USDM WRX turbo), but not as small as the VF7 trim RHB5 turbos that came on the 1.8L EA82T engine on the previous gen Subarus (Loyale, RX, Brat, XT, etc.).

Before you buy it make sure you look for shaft play, cracks and leaks. I just bought a RHB5 out of an 88 gl wagon and it is cracked and leaks like a sieve. So now I'm looking for another one.

I DON'T HAVE ANY PERSONAL EXP WITH THEM AS FAR AS WORKING ON THEM AND OR REBUILDING THEM BUT I HAVE HEARD THAT THEY CAN BE FUN DEPENDING ON HOW YOU WORK THEM INTO YOUR ENGINE AND I HEARD THAT IN STOCK FORM ON AN EJ22T YOU CAN MAKE THEM PRETTY FUN JUST BY PUTTING AN INTERCOOLER ON THEM, THAT'S WHAT I KNOW ABOUT THEM, I WOULD GET IT JUST TO HAVE A TURBO TO PLAY WITH, A LITTLE TURBO IS MORE FUN THAN NO TURBO

yep, i wanted something with a turbo, especially since this block can handle more boost than a wrx, it should be fun. i dont know about intercooling it, ill look into getting a saab 900 intercooler since i heard the wrx one doesnt fit quite as well...

I was talking with joel and kelly at rallitek and they were telling me that as appealing as an ej22t swap looks the heads are junk, the valve ports are about the size of a dime and even with machining and prep work they don't get much better. They told me that if you are going to use an ej22t block that i should get 2.5rs heads they flow much better and you can put just as much fun boost into them as a set of 2.2 heads

Food for thought...

yeah thats what ive heard about the heads... either 2.5RS heads or WRX heads are a huge improvement. plus the lifters in the engine i got are loud, a common subaru problem.. (my 1.8 clicked as well but not as loud as this one now) hopefully the 3" TBE and spooling turbo will cover it up
