I've been researching this myself. (I have a '97 Legacy Outback wagon.) My recommendation, if you live on the east coast I would say talk to East Coast Swappers (ECS Performance - http://conversions.eastcoastswappers.com/swap_info.php ), or find a company that can do it for you.
Also read this http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1612715 .

If you do want to do the transplant anyway, get an engine, tranny, rear differential, and ALL of the wiring harness - including the ECU. You will also need to figure out the wiring of your instrument panel, and other small items.
Get as much of the brake system, hubs, a new set of wheels (the STis have a larger disc diameter).

If I think of anything else, I'll post.

Later, T.J.

Engine, transmission, rear diff etc..... will all drop right in (excluding the twin turbo engines) The wiring is the fun part as it's completely different.

Almost forgot, you'll also need a Legacy turbo (not sure if the Impreza will fit) Crossover, our NA crossover doesn't have the cutout for the uppipe.
