Default Air cleaner location

Does anyone have any hard data as too the best location for the air cleaner for power development.

I had my cone filter mounted in the fender well via a 3" flexible hose but temporarily relocated it to the engine bay by the ABS pump after I ripped my fender liner off in a rally-x. My butt dyno now tells me that the car now feels more powerful, especially around 4000rpm but logic would suggest that it is now sucking warmer air.

Well, I would imagine that having the straightest, smoothest pipe would increase air speed, but as for placement of the filter I would assume it depends on the physics of the individual filter.
