Default Stereo Project: Update 2

Ok, I've done a few minor things since my last update and of course taken some more pics. Here is the last post: http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthr...threadid=78963

First off, I returned my Nakamichi headunit. I was not happy with the unit for a number of reasons:

The price for the features
It had a cheap feel to it
Made in Malaysia (for a unit this expensive, this isn't acceptable)
The radio sucked (they have a reputation of being good though)
IT REFUSED TO PLAY ANY BRAND OF CDR!!!!!!!!

So, I now have an Eclipse CD5441 waiting for me, but at $500 I'm not sure if I'm going to buy it... we'll see. As of now the stereo is all stock again and to be honest, I'm happy to have the stock HU back in.

Also, I carpeted my box and reinstalled my interior. The carpet job is temporary as I couldn't find the right cloth, but I wanted to give it a shot and see how it looked. I don't have all of my equipment or my wiring yet and I'm going on a Vacation this Saturday and moving to Atlanta when I get back. Thus, this project will be put on hold for a bit which really sucks cuz I had the time to finish it all this week and now I have to drive all the way to Atlanta with the damn stock stereo

Anyway... on too the pics! You'll notice that the box design worked out perfectly as the spare tire is still accesable, it doesn't use TOO much space up, it looks really cool from the interior, and the sections of the subs that don't fire through the armrest fire through the foam in the rear of the seats (which I will eventually drill out and paint black).

about your selection of head units i agree with you about your nak head unit they have fallen off lately
as far as you new choice the eclipse i cant argue with that either i used to sell them and they are the best sounding deck on the market today but they two are limited on all the features both usable and non usable
the only thing that makes the eclipse so tight is the 8 volt preouts
as an alternative i might suggest the new mp3 player from kenwwod
features out the wazoo plus the ablity to fit 120 mp3 files on one cd 4'5 volt preouts d-face and built in parametric crossover now it dosn't sound quit as clean but for 400.00 dollers that is a hell of a lot more features
anyway just giving a little info and your box looks great!

How much did it cost (including the trials and errors) to make your box?

Honestly I have heard a couple Eclipse head units but all of them were on sound display at a car stereo shop.

I recently had the opportunity to hear a finely tuned Pioneer/Clarion system.

I was absolutely amazed. The guy had a Pioneer Premier Head unit that had the Auto EQ feature. Honestly I have not been impressed At All with the sound quality of what Pioneer has come out with for years. However it only took one listen to change my mind. I feel that the auto EQ (A speaker is attached to the driver's side head rest while the head unit sends out test signals and automatically makes precise calibrations to frequency boost and cut in order to get the best curve) is one of the greatest innovations pioneer has ever come out with.

Not that you were asking me, but all of the boxes I've built have cost me probably in the range of $30 - $40 each. That includes: wood, glue (wood and contact cement), screws, carpet, and teminal caps. The only thing the price doesn't include is labor...

Thumbs up

That looks really good. I love how the arm rest folds down to show the subs behind.

Comment on the head unit thing: that's a lot of money for a deck and there are a lot of good decks at that price. Heck for $500 you could get a Clarion AutoPC. The Eclipse's big advantage are the preouts (5V? 8V? 16V?) and the anti-theft. It's an awesome deck, don't get me wrong. It's just that there are a lot of awesome decks for that much cash.

Good luck with your selection and thumbs up on the sub box and install.

the eclipse deck is the best for sound quality thats why i think he made that choice...i also have an eclipse deck and that made the stock speakers sound so much better..

I think your forgot the cost of the *drivers* unless listening to a hollow box is fun. :-)
