OMGHi2U when did schools start teaching the "i tyep liek i want so dont judje me" method?

u dont evun no me & n e thing abot me so dont judje my grammer i dont need 2 no how 2 tyep!!1!

seriously, i wasn't in school that long ago. if i handed anything in to a college professor, or a high school teacher typed like that, i would have been laughed back into elementary school.

has the collective intelligence of the country really slipped that far in the 8 years since i've been in public school?

inspired by the incredibly intelligent arguments posed in this thread.

About the same time they banned dodgeball (too violent) and the red pen (too intimidating), I guess.

The curse that is AOL and text messaging. My Department Manager sent me this email last week...

Yeah, ever since they started the "no child is ever wrong" approach to teaching this kind of stuff has gotton more common.

The arrival of the internet & chatrooms didn't help either.

If I were a teacher and that mandate came across my desk, I would have quit on the spot.

Also, it shows more about the mentality of the individual. I graduated in 1998, when chat rooms and IM'ing had already been in full swing. I think I just type normally because I don't want to be percieved as a douche bag.

Meh, when I was in graduate school I worked on a research project with 2 guys who couldn't write worth a damn. And they were in graduate school! I rewrote the entire project myself and then I raised hell to the professor about how the school of social work apparently has lower standards for men than women, (because there are hardly any men in sowk), as evidenced by the crap those two gave me as their share of the project.

Ppl don't care anymore. They push kids thorugh school.

I can't stand how people don't take the time to spell out words.

AC Lerok's ee cummings style is about where my tolerance levels lie.

I think it started when spell checkers and word editors became widespread. When students are required to submit a typed essay they don't have to worry about grammEr, they just use the spell check.

We had to write everything by hand, and each grammar or puntctuation mistake lowered the grade by one. "5" (A) was the highest.

As do I, but I'm referring to the unwashed masses.

I still spell out "you" if I'm texting my wife.

That email I quoted above came from a woman in her mid 50's, she's the Head Manager of the entire Law Department here at work. It's just sad to see her type as poorly as the clerk in our file room, who has maybe five working brain cells.

I used an old school typewriter up until the middle of my first year of graduate school. Twas a pain in the ass. I didn't like white-out, so if I made a mistake, I'd type the whole page over.

It was mostly a matter of being broke and too busy to sit in a computer lab. I wrote most of my papers very late at night after work.

That actually must have been really hard to type. I have to think way too hard to slack off like that.

That's okay.

My poor wife came to school with a word processor. Her luddite family never had a computer growing up.

Coming from my household where I had my own PC by the age of 10, and had a coaxial network in 1992, I was like:
