It's Like a Pastel Black

Default CEL out of nowhere

I was driving today and out of nowhere the check engine light came on. I'm not entirely sure why or how it happend. It's a 2002 WRX, 31,000 miles with no problems while I drive. Last year, I was out of the country and didn't drive the car for a month, and when I started it up, black smoke came out of the exhaust. This caused a CEL, which the dealer explained was the black smoke and a faulty 02 sensor.

I still haven't dont the 36,000 mi. maintenance on my car, could it have anything to do with the CEL? There was no black smoke this time, I've been driving regularly, and the CEL came on mid-drive. It might not have anything to do with the CEL, but the CEL did come on shortly after I turned on the A/C.

Any help would be appreciated.

YOu will get nowhere like that.
Go to Auto Zone and get the code checked, THEN come back and post what it is if you want some advise.

A CEL can be caused by a loose gas cap. Did you tighten your gas cap? (Now you see why we need the code)

What area of MD are you in. I have a code reader with definition and data display.

first of all....finish up your 30k maintenance, and get the code checked.

If you're lucky, it could just be a harmless random CEL that you can just clear with a scanner and be done with it.

Take it to Autozone, ask them to check it for you, it should be free. But DON'T clear it until you verify that the problem is either fixed, or not a problem at all.

My WRX does that. I usually hit the gas and it goes away.
