Default help with understanding engine type#'s

can anybody tell me the difference between EJ251,EJ255,EJ257....
I just purchased an 04 legacy 35th anniv edition with a EJ251 engine (auto.non turbo)
In attempting to buy some modest performance parts it appears that the EJ251 is never listed as an engine used on an 04 legacy.Im confused-seems the 251 was used in the late 90's?I understand that the 25(first 2 digits)is the engine size (2.5) WHAT do the other digits refer to?
THANKS

My '99 Legacy 2.5 GT (non turbo) uses an EJ25 Phase I Engine that displaces 2.5 Liters. I know that Subaru intoduced a revised engine block known as the Phase II, and that the Turbo charged WRX STi uses a modified version of this same engine block. My uneducated guess is that the extra digit is a "revision number" specifing the different "flavours" that the EJ25 Phase II engine is now available as. I am sure someone else can tell you more about those different numbers though.

You Legacy is at the end of a model year. IIRC, the breakdown is as follows:

EJ257 – turbo block, semi-closed deck, used on 04-05 STI and 05 XT Legacy’s (including OB).
EJ255 – NA version block, used on same years but for non-turbo. Also I believe recent Impreza RS’s used the EJ255
EJ251 – NA version block, years prior such as your 04’ Legacy…
