i miss my RS...

Talking Easy Power!

well I've heard that losing the snorkel would be an easy little boost, but I didn't expect this much!! I have a 99RS with the MAF burden aboard and I have high hopes of converting someday so I've been reserved about getting into the specialized intakes for my car($$), but this was easy and FREE, not to mention the sound which now compliments my prodrive exhaust just perfectly!!

No new info here...just ranting good feedback for this minor operation!

Was the 99 L MAP or MAF? I dont remember... I know the RS is MAF.

With the older MAF L's, the snorkel trick is definatly good for a big shot in the pants. Frees quite a bit of HP.

there really isn't much to it, just a bit of knuckle bruising clearing everything out of the way in that little space in front of the wheel.

I've removed the "snorkel" (silencer) from my 95 1.8 impreza a couple of times. It actually didn't free up any ponies. Actually it felt slower. It did sound great though, so great that people would think I was trying to race them and they would almost always step on it and pass me. I got tired of that since my 1.8 is too slow to compete, and just put the snorkel back on. I may remove it again once I get a 2.5 crammed in there. Then I will actually have some ponies to back up the cool sound. I can't stand it when some 1.6 liter honda civic passes by so friggin' loud and isn't even going fast. I'm definately not trying to compete with them for "cool" points.
I think the silencer actually smooths out the sound waves/airflow into the mass airflow sensor and helps the air flow more smoothly. When the intake is buzzing and vibrating at some rpms the airflow will actually be hindered. Or maybe it's just my car only.

I have ram-air effect when at speed with this setup. I might be getting 1-2 psi possible, I don't know. But it does draw air from the fender rather than behind the headlight in the engine bay.

do you have a vac guage or are you just butt-dyno verifying it?

the fender is pretty closed off... it's seperated from the engine bay so it's cooler but i really doubt it's actually ram air unless you have a fender inlet of some sort.

yeah it sucks until you run it to the fender, then it's nice.

those lovely little orange(or black on some) vents under the turn signals do allow air into the fender,... while in motion= "ram-air"....eh, but it is coming in.

I have a '99 L bumper, I took off the fog light cover so the air goes directly into the fender and that's where the intake air box is sucking from.
