Default coolant in oil...

Sorry, I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this in, but anyways...

My girlfriend has a Pontiac Grand Am. A couple months ago she took it to a shop to get the coolant flushed and the oil changed. Not too long after we heard this clicking that sounded like it was coming from the cylinder head, and it sped up with the engine. I figured it had something to do with the valves but i didn't know what. I had her turn off the car and turn it back on and the noise went away. I told her to just call me if it did it again and it didn't. Well today it started doing it again, and worse, so she took it to the Pontiac dealer and they said that when the shop did the coolant flush they got coolant into the oil. So she took it to the shop and they dumped her oil and there was something wrong with it, it was really gunky and burnt up (and its been a little less than 3,000 miles). So my question is, other than the possibility of the shop accidentally dumping coolant into the oil fill 'hole' on the valve cover, is there any way that they could have gotten coolant into the oil? My first thought was that its the head gasket and Pontiac is trying to get out of fixing it, but I dunno. Any advice/opinions will be appreciated...

Rob

well, change the oil and coolent and see if it still does it. if so, you could have a HG leak, or a cracked head.

if you take it somewhere, they can do a leakdown test for hydrocarbons in the radiator. That's a sure sign the head gasket is leaking- shouldn't be any exhaust gas in the coolant. Good evidence to support your case if you got to the dealer

the shop is keeping the car overnight tonight (she got it there right before it closed) and they are gonna do more testing on it in the morning. i havent dealt much with head gaskets, but would it be possible for there to be only one small leak between a coolant 'chamber' and an oil 'chamber'??

if you mean can the fail gradually / have only a small leak on one part of the gasket, yes. That's exactly what happened to my suby. Not enough to really notice daily driving, no noticable white smoke in the exhaust. Didn't know till I had the car inspected before purchase. Best 80 odd dollars I ever spent.
