Default Heat shield rattle

I'm getting tired of getting under my car to bend this sucker. I'm also tired of hearing it when I drive. I know it's the heat shield because when I bend the heat shield where it rattles, it stops, temporarily.

Is there a way to permanently get rid of the rattle? Maybe I could swap the exhaust manifold from my mom's 2003 OBW to my Legacy? Or would it be possible to get the manifold itself heatcoated, so a shield isn't neccessary?

I have been thinking more and more about getting a Borla or TWE header. As I understand it, the TWE header is performance, and Borla is sound oriented. Truth to this? Also, either TWE or Borla comes heat coated, so there isn't a shield to rattle, right?

borla is performance oriented (smoother and wider, but still snakey unequal length)... but it helps the sound way more than it helps the horses. if the rest of your engine is stock, and you put on borla's, you'd probably see less than 5 peak hp.

whereas TWE and Brullen and Cobb are all equal length... which means not only are they smoother and wider, but they also are engineered to have equal running lengths from the cylinder ports to the collectors and catpipe flange. the equal runners balances the pressures on the exhaust stroke, and is supposed to let the engine breathe a WHOLE lot easier.

think of it like having a bicycle and one pedal is on a crank that's 4" long, but your other leg is pushing a pedal that's on a 16" crank. you'll have a lot harder time peddling that bike.

with no other mods, you might see around 15 extra peak hp with an EQ length header.

it's a difference, but to say that borlas only make noise and don't help performance at all is probably not too factual of a statement.

if i were you... i'd either-

take off the heatshields and wrap the headers with heat wrap(header tape)


get new headers if you want to spend the money. you could probably find some stock headers for CHEAP and the newer they are, the less likely they are to rattle.

or you could try the headers that are sold on ebay for 200 bucks and look just as good as the borla.

it's up to you.

oh yeah, you could also just turn up your stereo to ear-damaging volume.
