Default Automatic transmission connected to ECU?

My friend has an '05 Legacy GT AT. How much does his ECU control the tranny shifting? Like how closely are these things related. Can EM make his shifts sharper and his throttle response different, or is that strictly a mechanical issue within the tranny.

I believe that the ECU controls engine function and monitors trans function(s)(vehicle speed, for instance)----but has no control over them....I believe that the trans has its own electronic control unit....and don't think that can be 'modded'.....

legacygt.com or one of the legacy forums may be a better place to get specifics on that car.
