Forester Help! A Non-believer!!

my friend just complained to me that his old suby is weak and tired! He has a 98 (MAF/MAP??) forester and I'm determined to show him that it can be great fun!! He's a bit wary I think of blowing too much dinero on it but I think a nice CAI might really hit the spot....though a cheap magnaflow exhaust + piping froma muffler shop might give him more gains maybe???

The posts I've found are old and I wanted to ask:
1. What is the latest/greatest intake for the aging 98 forester??
2. Would a 97 or 98 impreza intake be a direct fit (no way he's gonna modify it ) ....I assume that model is easier to find.
3. What type of engine do they have? (he lives far away...I haven't seen the car)

Thank you for any help!!
z.

usually the n/a 2.5l. subaru 2.5rs has same engine basically. depending on what year it's map or maf. find an intake from the same year 2.5rs it's a direct swap. hope this helps!

Pretty sure it is a MAF. I know my 98 Legacy is, as well as 98 RSs are too.

98 Forester has a MAF. Just about any intake will work with some modding to fit the MAF inline. Cobb or Ganzflow seem to work best...but the differences are probably not that noticable.

What are you trying to do with it? Manual or auto? Either jack it up with one of the kits that are available and go off-road, or drop it some and enter an autocross. I believe the manuals have the 4.44:1 final drive ratio making it become quite lively with smaller wheel/tire combos. Add some basic suspension pieces and have at it!

Or sell it to me!

thanks jay that's real useful... i'd love to sell it...but it's not mine! I'm trying to help my friend out with his daily driver, though I'll certainly pass on the lift suggestion!

I don't carry too much to specifically for a Forester but we can always try to see what matches up. I do carry upgraded pads and rotors by EBC if he would be interested in some more economical stopping power.

Thanks,
Jackie
