Exclamation Tri-State FAQ

Tri-State FAQ

This FAQ is a compilation of answers to questions which seem to be asked over and over again within this forum. As such, the answers are only culled from previous threads within Tri-State; there is no "outside" information here.

Generally speaking, I am not offering subjective viewpoints on which vendor is better at which service. Please refer to the official Vendor Review Threads for such information. Also if you are surprised to find no one listed (or someone prominently missing from a list), then it is because they are not a registered NASOIC vendor (click here in order to find out how to become one).

Please PM me with any suggestions/comments/additions/corrections and I will do my best to promptly address each one. Thank you and enjoy!

What is tri-state? What geographical area does it include? Ask about 10 different people what the tri-state area is, and you will probably get about 15 different answers. Since everyone seems to think that the world revolves around them, suffice it to say that "tri-state" is more a state of mind, than any actual physical location. Most folks from NYC will claim that it is NY/NJ/CT, whereas most people from Philly says it's PA/NJ/DE. Either way, you're basically talking the general area between Mid-A, New England and I-81.

Unlike most other physical areas that have their own chapters, Tri-State is a regional forum. According to this thread, this is because of varied reasons and the fact that no one here wants to "step up to the plate" (whatever that means).

Where can I get my car tinted? What are the legal limits? Various individuals and businesses are well-known in the tri-state area for performing this highly important task. The only one I can officially list at this time is Lee Berbs, who is associated with AZP Installs.

Regarding legal limits, NJ law allows any % on rear windows only. You are, however, allowed to have a strip at the top of your windshield. PA apparently has very a vague tinting law; CirrusWRX had a rant about that here. As regards NY, DE and CT, I do not know at this time...if someone else does, please shoot me a PM. Feel free to inquire with your local DMV office for 100% accurate, up-to-date guidelines.

Where should I purchase my new/used Subaru? What should I expect to pay for XX car with YY options? As is the case above, none of the dealerships I found are registered vendors; therefore none can be officially listed. Please use SOAs web site to find a dealership in your area, and then search either the Official Dealership Review Thread or the Vendor Review Threads for individual feedback on your choice. Keep in mind, however, that one person's experience may not be truly representative, and whether good or bad, can be wholly the result of their own attitude and demeanor. Read everything with a grain of salt.

Asking other people what they paid for their car is a bad idea. There are simply too many variables that cannot be controlled nor predicted nor will remain constant over any given period of time. Your best bet is to go to Edmunds.com and find out everything you need to know about the car you want. They have an excellent calculator feature which will tell you what price to expect based on options and geographic location. Then proceed to shop, always mindful of the information you have learned. The most important thing is that you end up a satisfied customer, not whether you end up paying more or less than someone else.

Please refer to "Questions that cannot be answered on NASIOC" for an even better explanation of this line of reasoning.

My "Check Engine Light" (CEL) is on. What should I do? If you are looking for a place to determine what OBDII error code caused your CEL, visit any AutoZone and they will scan your ECU for free. After you know what the code is, go to the Service & Maintenance forum in NASIOC Technical and do a SEARCH if what you're looking for isn't immediately visible on the current thread list.

Where can I get my car dynoed? Who can tune my aftermarket engine management system (such as UTEC, Xede, EcuTEK, etc.)? Most tuners in the Tri-State area offer both dyno services and EM tuning (it's really quite hard to do one without the other). DynoJet is a well-known name in dynamometers, and they conveniently have an online directory where you can find the nearest one in your particular state. Other popular brands are DynaPack and Mustang.

According to the official Tri-State registered vendor directory, the following businesses provide tuning. Please contact them individually to determine cost and availability:

- Rallispec (Hainesport, NJ)
- Precision Tuning (Brick, NJ)

For UTEC tuning in particular, check out TurboXS in Gaithersburg, MD (not quite Tri-State, but apparently well worth the trip). Vishnu Performance Systems offers EM tuning options, and even though they are located in CA, they typically come out to the east coast to provide hands-on support for new and existing customers once or twice a year.

Unabomber's Engine Management FAQ is also a good place to find additional information on this topic.

Who does drivetrain/engine swaps? See above.

Where can I get bodywork done? Who does paintless dent repair? Our official Tri-State vendor associated with this service is Ultimate Collision Center in Mt. Vernon/Peekskill, NY.

Why is it so important that only vendors can post threads selling services? Basically, the answer to this is because "those are the rules". Please pay particular attention to #5 under the heading NASIOC NON-Registered Vendor Specific Rules. This would include any post which is intended to "determine interest" or to schedule meets wherein services or goods will be traded for money in any form; however, a private one-time sale of new or used equipment is acceptable (please note that, in these cases, the thread title should begin with either "FS" or "F/S" to clearly identify its purpose).

Although I may not need to re-iterate the rules here, this seems to be a fairly frequent violation in both Tri-State and NASIOC in general.

That's enough for now. Yet to be answered...
- Where can I get rims repaired?
- Do NJ State Troopers provide any useful public service other than writing speeding tickets? (j/k)
- Where can I go to race my car in a controlled and legal environment?
- Where are the worst places to park my car if it doesn't have any additional security devices installed? (more specific than "anywhere")

My suggestions...

Where to go for an alignment?

Questions relating to emissions testing?

A long time ago we decided there were too many stickies up top, so we consolidated some thread links into the "Threads of Note" sticky. I'll put a link to this one in there, and keep an eye on how the thread works out. Of course people actually have to go in there and click the link, but even if they don't this will give us a reference thread to link to rather than answer the same Q's over and over and over and---
Bear in mind though that many of these questions have regionally-based answers, i.e. "where to go for xx", "speeding ticket in xx state/county", "inspection in xx" etc. and there will be many possibilities given the large geographical area the forum covers. So it may be difficult to cover all the bases in one thread, but you're welcome to try.
And thanks Dave for the effort.
BTW I can tune ham radios but I don't do EM-

Holy Good Idea, Batman!

Definitely include tips on how to post & host a good meet. Some people just don't know to include more than just a one liner or question about whether there is a meet happening at all.....

Rule number 1: You post asking about it, you make the meet.

For that one, here are some links to the NYSDMV inspection FAQs-
http://www.nysdmv.com/vehsafe.htm#NYVIP
http://www.nysdmv.com/repairshop.htm#NYVIP

Someone can post the equivalent links for NJ, CT and PA.

Of course this may not address the issue of whether YOUR individual car will pass, there are too many variables to make a blanket statement (i.e. "all swapped cars will pass/fail") etc.

Ok, if this thread is going to be useful we should keep the posts to being informative and OT. No more messing around in here please.

There have been posts in Tri-State discussing such things, as well as in the powertrain, engine management and conversion forums. If someone wants to look around for those links and post them in here, feel free. Just make sure they are truly relevant to our local requirements.

I am the Unabomber and I approve of this message!

I listed every dragstrip and every dyno in the Mid-A. You might be interested in copying the style/format as I've done it below:

Mid-A dragstrips
Mid-A dynos

I did keep the "unwritten line" dividing us, so all the PA listings are west of Philly as I'm sure there is are dynos/drag stips in Philly and east of there.

Thumbs up

Bump for Tri-State FAQ.....long overdue. This should have it's own sticky, where n00bs are more likely to see it & click on it.

Can't say I care for the bashing of Liberty Subaru....what the FAQ? I've purchased (2) wrx's from them, and bring my Cobb Stage 2 / lowered wagon in for regular services there. They're one of the oldest & most respected Suby dealers in the Northeast, and I've never had any sales / service / warranty issue with them. Besides that, I talked them into supplying a Tribeca as a hole-in-one car for a charity golf outing I'm producing. In my opinion, and based on my test-drive & purchase inquiries, Bill Kolb, Ramsey, and Lynn are much worse....

Anyways, I don't think that dealer props or bashing belong in the main FAQ thread at all.....maybe links to a separate vendor review thread, etc.

Apart from that, nice work so far!

As you should have picked up from the introduction in the first post, I do not really want to ursurp the supremecy of the Vendor Review Threads, and in fact I have included a link to them. However, I thought it would be worthwhile to provide a summary of popular opinion. The real point of the FAQ is to help provide answers, not just to direct people elsewhere for everything.

I trust that you have updated the Review Thread with this information. Meanwhile, I appreciate your feedback and have changed the language in the main post to be less subjective

Next?

Perhaps a link to Dealership Reviews in addition to the "vendor reviews" link. I know that thread is not just Tri-State, but let people flame each other's car dealer there...

Maybe a list of recommended alignment shops by NNJ, Central, SNJ region, as that comes up all the time.

More suggestions to follow. Again, nice work...

Ok, this thread can be very useful but here is what it will NOT be-
It will not be a dealer review thread. NASIOC already has one of those and by its nature it's already a regionally based forum although the reviews from all the dealers around the country are in one place. Please post all dealer reviews and recommendations in the existing dealer forum, already linked above by Cole. We don't need a "department of redundancy department".
It will not be a place to review and/or recommend any vendors, INCLUDING Subaru dealers, who are not NASIOC vendors. This is not fair to our supporting Tri-State vendors since this thread is linked in the "threads of note" sticky and will (hopefully) be a frequently-used reference. And of course we already have both a general and local Vendor Review thread for our registered vendors.
It will not be a place to bash anyone or anyone's business.
Attempting to do too much here will doom this thread, let's keep it to a truly useful smattering of info of interest to Tri-Staters that is not readily available elsewhere on NASIOC.

Please note that I have, in fact, changed the language in the original post. I have attempted (and will continue to attempt) to remove any hints at subjectiveness, although admittedly I can't be perfect. Would you prefer I remove AutoZone from the question about CELs since they aren't a registered Vendor?

Please help me out by mentioning specific problems and only after you have reviewed the lastest content. I do not want to hurt anyone's feelings, especially registered vendors and/or moderators. But I don't want to be jerked around either.
