Default I need your help..again

Hey guys, I need help. My 93 legacy wagon is on life support. I have repaired several things this year and I am almost done. But now the car is making two wierd noises.

Noise one- When I turn left at low speed 25-40 it sounds like there is a golf ball rolling inside one of the axles. I am thinking it might be a brake pad or rotor or something like that. I hope it is not a bearing.

Noise two- This one is only when the car accelerates under load, i.e. uphill on the freeway. It sounds like a knocking until I accelerate above 3k rpm. Loose valve? Simple Knocking? I hope this one is not diagnosed by the engine blowing apart.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

1. Probably a bearing...could be the CV joints too if the boot has been busted for some time and other material has gotten in. Could be pads too, but I've never heard the pads causing a golf ball like noise.

2. dunno..good luck with that one.

1. I'll 2nd the wheel bearing or CV. does the sound get faster with speed? if so, I bet bearing.

2. does it have oil?

1. Golf ball rolling? Like where you can hear the dimples? Agree on bearing or CV joint. Visually inpsect the CV boots. That wont eliminate the CV joints entirely, but most CV joint probs are caused by compromised boots.

2. Could be simple knocking. Try a high octane fuel and see if it improves for starters. No CE I take it? The BC/BFs have a bit of a history of over-active knock sensors. Does the car bog down while making the noise? Or is it smooth acceleration?

oh man that is the golden question of the year, you are talking about the car right?

The first one sounds like a CV joint is it kind of like a metal on metal sound? i had that with one of my joints, a bearing would sound more like a loud click while turning toward the side of the bearing

The second i would say sounds like a knock, is it really bad or just something faint, there isn't a doubt that it could be your octane but Subaru does such a good job making engines run off of crappy gas that i can't imagine that it would randomly begin knocking after so many years of not

My friends 93 Legacy sedan also has that golf ball rolling around sound at 35ish mph....wow, I thought it was unique to his rig

Yea....

I in fact do have a torn cv boot. That takes care of one noise.

The knocking seems to be getting a little louder. There is no change in power delivery, but it has me a little scared.

The plugs all look good. I am wondering if this is pre-ignition and is a normal part of working an old car hard. It only does it when accelerating.

It's possible that the engine has developed the well documented case of piston slap.

Oh. I noticed on one of my plugs that there is a little scorching. Could an erant spark be part of the problem?

Possibly, or the scorched plug could be the result of the detonation.

Swap the plugs or try the high octane fuel and go to the same location you got the knock and try again or vice versa. Eliminate alternatives systematically.

Cool Problem Solved

Problem Solved!!

I had the whole half-shaft replaced. Both noises disappeared. I guess the "detonation" was actually caused by extra stress on the bad cv joint. HA!

Thanks for all your help guys. (ladies too)

Update on my friends 93 Legacy "golf ball" sound. One of his exhaust hanger bushings is actually very worn out, and on turns the exhaust kind of jumps/rattles around in the bushing, hence, the sound.
