Default 2005 Legacy air filtration kit - Nightmare!

Trying to install this sucked on the 05 Legacy. I purchased the kit from SubaruParts.com and I'm going to send it back. I was able to remove the glovebox, but on the Legacy there is a liner that also needs to come out. The installation documentation description didn't match the car. It showed screws in positions that there were no physical screws. The liner is connected to the center console and the instructions didn't show how to pull that apart. I didn't want to force it and break something so I put it all back together. I'm a good mechanic who has installed turbos, up-pipes, exhausts, electronics etc. on my WRX and STi but this install left me frustrated. Has anyone else attemped this on their 05 Legacy or Outback? What's the trick to get the liner out?

thanks,

Paul
