Default Installed new HU and dash lights dont work, help!

Hi i'm a newbie and i have a quick question. i tried to do a seach but wasnt able to find anything. i bought a new stereo, bought the wiring harness to match my stock HU, installed everything tonight, including front and rear speakers. everything works fine, but then when i took my car out for a spin at night, i realized that my dash lights dont come on. my speedometer and tach (basically all the green lights) dont come on??? i remember when wiring the harness to my new HU i had one extra wire left over, the illuminator wire (from my stock wiring harness) which i left bare. was i suppose to connect that to a power source? or to something else? i checked all my existing lights and everything works, i havent checked my fuses yet. is there anything else i should check? or do? this is off of my 04 wrx. thanks in advance!!!

the orange "illumination" wire is grounding out somewhere. You definetly need to tape that up and replace the fuse it blew... everything should be good after that

Yeah I would guess you left bare wire and it blew the fuse. Same thing happened when my HU was stolen.

If you look at the pinouts in the link from the forum sticky, you'll note that Subaru has *2* illumination wires, Illum+ and Illum-. Most aftermarket HUs only have 1 illumination input; in that case, attach Illum+ to it and tape off Illum- so it doesn't short out on something.
Either Illum+ or Illum- touching ground could cause a short that could lead to your problems. If you're lucky, it's a blown fuse. If you're unlucky, it's the "light dimmer" module, which is a lot more expensive and a hassle to get at.

where is it? how to test if thats my problem w/ my dash lights not coming on? how much is it? Should I just cut my losses and take it in to the dealer?

Why don't you just tape the ilum wire and change the fuse (f/b "left side under steering wheel" No. 9 - 10a)

cuz I checked all that and the fuse is fine and I did cap the ilum wire. See I was a dumb ass or my brother was when we went to put my CD player in and we tried to hook it all up w/o buy a wire harness. So he was hookin things together and found out the hard way that it doesn't work. So I went and bought one and hooked it up the right way. People have said that a fuse could be blown and you don't know it by looking at it. So i'll have to doubly check but I'm damn sure its not the fuse.

Given your level of expertise, I think at this point your best bet is to take it to a mechanic who deals with electrical work. Since diagnostic/repair labor is likely to cost more than the parts, an independent mechanic with a cheaper hourly rate will save you a bit of money. A Subaru-only shop would be ideal.
