Default speedometer fix

when i first got my legacy when i was 16 i hated the small 14in tires so i bought some 16in GT wheels, i drive a 240sx now but my sister now drives the legacy and she just got a speeding ticket, is there an easy way to make the speedo on my legacy L read the same at the GT. thanks the car is a 1996

Well as long as the rolling circumferance is the same there should be no need to fix this.

P185/80R14 ~= P205/55HR16 ? Let me check.

EDIT: Here is the link to the tyre size calculator :
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalcold.html

The result says that if anything the speedometer is reading a shade high:

Quote:
Speedometer reading with nonstock tyre is 3% too fast.
When your speedo reads 60MPH you are actually travelling 58.2 MPH
Assuming these are the correct tyre sizes, and your '96 L Speedometer is up to spec, the problem lies with your sister, not with the speedometer.

Oh, and where abouts are you ??

I might have a set of STOCK '96 Legacy "L" fourteen inch steel wheels complete with the origional grey plastic wheel covers that should really make your sister's ride stand out, If you want to add some bling.

oh damn i was looking for that calculator, i used another random one off line from a 4wheeling site and it said it was about 8-9%off

edit no wait your wrong stock tire size (per tire rack) is 185/70-14

so its 2.8% too low

Sorry about that.
2.8% is basically nothing (less then 2 MPH error when travelling 60PMH, although thats on the high site of whats legal), The most obvious way to fix this would be to get 205/50HR16 Tyres the next time you need replacement rubber. That will put you 1/2MPH under the indicated 60MPH.

Actually I found driving a '96 Legacy "L" through a "your speed is" radar warning that at an indicated 30 MPH, I was actually traveling at 26 MPH using 185/70SR14 tyres.

So with the 205/55HR16 Tyres you should be exactly on the money.

LOL, I always try and mess with those things. They always seem to be off by at least 4 mph.
