Question Urgent: What kind of battery fuels your Subaru?

I will be up by Canada for school this upcoming year, and I need something that will crank over in real cold weather....so Ill ask you guys! Its kind of convinent that mine 99% died today, and I leave on Sunday What do you use, and where did you get it!?

I would suppose any normal battery would suffice.

However, the winters in mid and Eastern Canada are a lot colder than the mild winters here in Western Canada...so I think a battery with some form of "Winter" advertising would do.

Get the biggest thing you can find. Don't go for less than 700 COLD cranking amps. Cold cranking amps means the battery is tested at -10 celcius I believe, instead of 20 celcius. Just about anything you could be rated with a decent number of cold crank amps ought to get her going. I'm using an optima red top gel cell, and it works great. Very pricey though.

The stock Subie battery has never failed me, even in -40 weather.

Here here markus.....Western Canada also consists of Alberta too!! Oh yah, and we can't forget about Sask.

My stock Suby battery lasted through this winter, and i think it's sure to say that Alberta winters are way harsher then those wimpy showers BCer's call winter snowfall.
As far easter canada...i'm not too sure. About the same as alberta i suppose.

We get more white stuff on the ground after the Zamboni has cleared the ice!

Anywayz, as for the battery in my Subie - it's whatever they put in there at the factory. No problems yet.

Has it been two years already?!?!?

For an actual RESPONSE to your inquiry:

Sears released last year a DieHard battery with 980CCA! That is some serious jam for winter. We installed one (with a battery warmer) in a camperized van instead of two batteries & the guy keeps telling us about how good it is now. Oh yeah, he works as a ranger in NWT. Now those are serious winters.

I personally have never had any exp. w/ DieHards but have heard nothing but praise for them growing up until now.

Try to get a battery with a half decent warranty. Most batteries come with a pro-rata warranty. This means you pay for the time that you use it, usually by the month. The last battery I bought was a Pow-R-Surge. It was reasonably priced and it came with a 2 year straight exchange and 5 year pro-rata after that. I was lucky with that one. At 22 months, it started to go. My mechanic changed it for free. And definitely get a lot more CCA. It'll make a helluva difference in the winter. Also, if you loose your alternator, the battery may be able to get you to where you need to get to!
