Default BD Legacy grilles :L grille same as GT?

My 1999 Legacy L sedan sustained some damage to the grille, so I want to replace it.

I'm interested in keeping the appearance stock, and spending the minimum necessary to restore it to good/very-good stock-like appearance.

I can get a reasonably good deal on a '99 GT grille. I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me if these are the same and/or visually the same?

The local dealerships tell me it's a different part number, but can't tell me how they are different or why. Car-part.com comes up with a lot of GT listings when I specifically tell it to search for an L model.

Any input? Anyone looking to get rid of their stock Legacy L or equivalent-appearing grille?

i can't say about the 1999 model, but the 2000 to 2004 model grilles are interchangeable for the most part. I have a 2001 outback and i always hated the grille. then i saw the 2004 35th anniv legacy L grille and LOVED it. it was very sporty. the grilles had different part numbers, but fit the same. The outer part was the same shape, but the center looked a lot better. since it was different looking, it had a different part number...

I don't believe they are readily interchangeable. I think the L models have a slightly smaller grill (less space between the hood and bumper). The main reason I say that is because of the difference between my boy's '97 L, and the '98 GT that I used to own. Of course, that may have more to do with the different model year, rather than the L/GT difference.

Due to accident damage to the L, we've got an Outback grill attached to it now. The Outback grill is definitely a different size, both taller and deeper, but with some trimming so you can reach the hood latch, it does "wedge" in there to make an acceptable grill. That works fine for us, because it was free, but I'd hesitate to spend money on a brand new one that doesn't really fit.

I'm sure someone else on here will be able to tell you for sure, though. Just hang on, someone will jump in here with a solid answer for you.

they are different height grills. iirc, the 97-99 gt's use the taller grill, just like the outback. 95-99 l's use the shorter jdm-sized grill.

Exactly. What he said.

The (BD/BG) GT/Outback bumper has an indentation, making the grill opening larger (perhaps due to the 2.5l engine vs. the 2.2?). I think the best picture I have to show it is this (old) one:

You should be able to find a grill for a Brighton/L readily. Or, you lucky bastige, you can go with a JDM grill such as the Legacy Lightning Bolt Shield badge I covet so...

Actually I might be wrong but I thought only the 95-96 Legacys (Brighton, L and LSi) had the "flat" bumper with the smaller grill, where the 97-99 Legacys (including the "L") used more of an indented bumper with the larger grill.

Because it won't fit his bumper. That model grill is for bumpers with the flat top, the USDM GT bumper has a lower center section and needs a taller grill.

I want a JDM GT-B grill:

Or an Air-real grill:

While you're at it I'll take a JDM GT-B bumper, bumper beam, foglights and electric folding mirrors

Im not sure what you guys are going on about

Any 97-99 Legacy grill will fit your car (the L and GT have the same grill, my 98 L has the same grill as a GT). However, they are right about a 95-96 grill not fitting (it would fit,but it would have a big dumb gap on the bottom)

What he said.

AND the JDM GT-B grille above is also still a bit short for our cars. There are three grille heights on the BD/BGs in the USDM and JDM combined.

I wish you'd posted earlier . As it turns out, for some reason the salvage yard price isn't much better than what Subie Gal can get them for new.

As for all you JDM-crazed guys, I've no intention of spending that kind of money or time on my slushbox daily driver. Maybe when (if?) I get a Legacy GT manual?

dunno, but that grill looks pretty similar to the hipposleek knock-offs that you see on eBay all the time. those don't fit completely well with the USDM 98-99 bumper though.
