Default Preferred Replacement Tire for STi?

I've got 14k miles on my 2004 STi with the original RE070's. I imagine that by 20k I'll be needing a new set of tires, if not before then.

I only use my STi as a daily driver, no track events. I live in Georgia where snow/ice performance generally won't be an issue, just the occasional torrential downpour. I've had no issues with the wet traction on the stock RE070's.

I'm looking at options for a replacement tire other than the RE070's. I see there are a lot of options available, and I'm leaning towards a Max Performance Summer tire or Ultra-High Performance Summer tire.

Basically I'm looking for something with performance very near the stock RE070's but with longer life. If I get 20k out of my OEM RE070's, I'd like to get 30k-35k miles out of the replacements.

I'm guessing I'm going to need a tire with a treadwear rating somewhere in the 240-320 range. I just don't want to make the mistake of getting a higher life tire that's going to take away the cornering performance of the STi that makes it so much fun to drive.

Any recommendations from those that have switched to other tires than the stock RE070's?

-Michael

.....well...ya can't get the performance AND longer life.

....the sidewalls are VERY stiff on the re070's which leads to a good deal of the 'performance' of them.....and there are NO street tires that can match that.....the re070 is, for all intents, a treaded R type tire that subaru uses on the STi to achieve the performance that they desire.

There is no close substitute, so it is either a set of take off's for cheap(if you can find them) or pick something like a 'streetable' R compound.

I just bought the Hankook Z212's and am pretty happy with them....altough you will feel that any replacement 'street' tire is 'sloppy' after the re070's.....the Falken RT-615's may be an option.

One of the ones that looks like it might fit the bill is the BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW 2.

TireRack has is rated over the RE050A's and it looks like a good all-around performer.

Anyone out there put this tire on their STi, and if so, what are your thoughts on it?

I used the stock Re070, Toyo T1-S and now I'm running Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's. My favorite BY FAR has been the PS2's. They are grippy and ride very quietly/ comfortably. I've only have them on for 1000 miles so far, so I can't comment on life. I also havent been in a torential downpour with them yet, but I really don't expect there to be any problems as the tread looks like it handles water very well.
