Default '96 Legacy GT for $3500....too much?

My brother-in-law is looking at buying a 1996 Legacy GT. It has 140k on it, leather, moonroof, auto, AWD, alloys. Color is a dark blue. The used car dealer was asking $4100. My in-law offered $3500, inlcuding doc fee. What do you guys think? I took it for a spin, and everything seems to be in good shape. There are no noticeable leaks, exhaust is new, tires are new, brakes are kinda soft, shifts crisply. It's in pretty good shape, only a few dings in it.

High? Low?

Sounds ok. Around here, a '98 with 100k+ runs 6-7k at a dealer

That's what I said.

It's funny. he calls me up and asks me for Subaru advice, and then i go to work, and two of my co-workers ask me about Subarus. One wants a WRX, and the other wants a Legacy or Impreza sedan for his wife. Hmmmm...maybe I might look into a new career in the very distant future.

Thirty-five hundred is a fair price.

Just have a mechanic check out the car first (especially the cylinder head gaskets).

The only obvious down-side for this car is that 1996 was the first year for the EJ25, so it wasn't tuned as nicely as the 97 - 99 models. The '96 produces 10hp less and requires PREMIUM gas.

Yes definitely get a mechanic to look it over thoroughly. Also check service records especially those from about 75K up. See if the head gasket was done. IIRC these werre affected by the head gasket issues that a lot of us have had. Otherwise I'd say $3500 isn't too bad.

Peace,
Oquipah

Just to clarify... Having had the headgaskets done within the past two years is actually a very good thing as that was roughly with in the time frame for when Subaru introduced the "new and improved" heavy-duty head gaskets that seem to have resolved or at least greatly reduced the number of head gasket issues on the Phase I EJ25 motors.

I would say that never having had a head gasket issue OR having had head gaskgets done three or more years ago basically is meaningless as to anticipating the possibility of needing future head gasket work.
