Default Studded winter tires

I understand that it is only August but where can I start to look for winter tires? I'm looking for 205/55/16 studded winter tires for....um...this winter.

Try your local Nokian dealer. Some places its hard to get studded tires, mostly in the flatlands out east here. I forget what model Nokian is studdable though

Nokian Hakka 2's are studdable. I have unstudded Hakka2's (studs not legal here) and even without studs they are fantastic. I don't know your specific situation, but I wouldn't get a studded tire unless all I ever drove on was unplowed icy back roads in winter. On dry paved roads I've heard studs can be a pain.

Studded Hakkas rule the winter

If you don't have a local dealer, I got a great price on a package for my wife's RS from http://www.tirefactory.net/.

I live in a place where one winter would be fine running studless tires and then the next winter you'll wish you had them. We get a lot of ice here in eastern Washington but unfortunately it's not enough to keep the lobbyists from trying to make studded tires illegal.

There talking about making studded tire legal for the northern part of Ontario, but not the southern part. How they're going to enforce that I don't know?

Februrary 21, 2005 - The Ontario government is making good on a commitment to give Northern Ontario drivers more choices by introducing legislation that would allow the use of studded tires, Transportation Minister Harinder Takhar announced today.

"Northern communities have been asking for this for a very long time," said Takhar. "We want to give drivers the ability to choose from a variety of different tire technologies, based on driving conditions."

There are approximately 250,000 motor vehicle collisions on Ontario roads per year, about 20,000 of them in Northern Ontario. Of these, about 14 per cent occur in icy conditions.

"Given the severe weather in Northern Ontario that often results in treacherous driving conditions, clearly, this proposed legislation is good news," said Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci. "In particular, permitting the use of studded tires in our region is yet another indicator that our government is responsive to the needs of Northern Ontario residents."

The proposed legislation, if passed, would allow vehicles registered in Northern Ontario to use studded tires anywhere in Ontario. Only lightweight studs are proposed in order to minimize the damage to Ontario roads.

All other Canadian provinces and territories allow the use of studded tires.

Maybe an additional ticket if the officer sees them on your car when you are pulled over. They make a rather distinctive sound on pavement.

Ya, but people in the north can use them down south, but people from the south can't use them when they go up north. Where do you draw the line (literally - on the map)? What do you do about the guy who lives just south of "the line". His neighbour can have studs and he can't.
