Default A few short external video clips of the Legacy on track

I started a thread over in the Normally Aspirated forum using a few video clips to demonstrate what my exhaust sounds like. I figured I'd throw the link up over here so my Legacy brethren could see some Legacy track video. Anyway, here's the link - http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=822900 .

The first, short clip, and the third, really long clip, are both from an SCCA Regional racing day. A local Subaru dealership had sponsored the event, and arranged for 10 of us to get some free track time (2 groups of 5 on track for 15-20min each). I went out as the first car in the first group of 5 cars with 3 STi's and 1 WRX. Unfortunately, as I came around to finish my first lap, I caught up to the last car (a riced out STi horribly driven) just being released onto the track. He held me up for 2 laps because he didn't understand the passing flags and rules , which allowed the silver STi in the video clip to catch up to me. Once we got by the slow STi, they blue flagged me to let the silver STi past. I did so, but after 2 laps they blue flagged him to let me back by. After that I left him behind.

At the end of the session my car gathered quite a little crowd. I saw one guy check the mileage and then remark incredulously to his friends, "145 thousand miles!" The best, though, was a group of 4 or 5 guys probably in their late teens/early 20s. They were hovering around the car as I was putting all my stuff back in it. I heard one of them (looking under the hood) say, "I can't find it," so I started to walk up to them and ask what they were looking for. Before I could ask the question one of the other kids asks, "So, what turbo are you running on this thing?"

Me: "None."

First kid: "I told you I couldn't find it!"

Other kids: "No way, this thing's all N/A?!"

Anyway, it was pretty cool to get some positive comments from people who were there to watch the SCCA wheel-to-wheel racing, but were impressed enough by my driving to stop by the car.

The 2nd clip, the one with the Vettes and Porsche, is from a Super Lap event - basically, a time trial event. The red Z06 is pretty much always the fastest guy of the day at these events - really nice guy, very good driver in an essentially stock (but very capable) car running on Toyo RA-1s. The yellow Z06 was running street tires - not sure if they were the stock F1 Supercars or something else. Anyway, I caught up to him, and for about a lap and a half he was pushing pretty hard to stay ahead of me. On that second lap, though, coming out of both of the two tightest corners he got a little sideways as he fought for traction, at which point he decided to give it up and let me by. I proceeded to put some time on him over the next couple laps. At that point the red Z06 caught up to me, as I knew he would. I was running my little cone cam on the side of the car, so afterwards he said he considered staying behind me because he wasn't sure if the camera might be looking back. But, he said he quickly dispelled that thought and figured he'd better blow by me to show he could pass at will. Pretty funny.

In the end I ran a 41.22, slightly off my best time (41.05) - did I mention that the track is a tiny, 0.8mi road course? The red Z06 was down in the 39s (even after taking it a little easy because someone had oiled down the track on the run prior to his), and the yellow Z06 was about 0.5sec slower than me. Not too shabby for a 145,000mi 200hp family sedan.

PS - I have some footage on my videocamera from the Super Lap event, I just need to capture it and upload it to share.

Great videos and excellent narrative. Looks like the camera man left you out of the majority of the third video(?) But did make sure to capture the riced out STI.

I really enjoyed seeing a BD Legacy on the track with all those WRX, STI, and other even faster cars. Car looks great, handles incredibly well, and has that mean NA boxer sound…

That riced out STi sounded like it had a good bit of work done, though.

I suspect that Subaru had something to do with the descision to exclude most of your driving in the Subaru track day video. Given that their goal is to sell the newer cars, not some 8-year-old 145,000 miler (that flat-out out runs the newer more powerfull WRXs), I guess I can understand why.

Very impressive videos.

It looked like in the 3rd video (on the few rare instances where they didnt edit you out) like your inside rear tyre was lifting off the pavement (cornering on three wheels), even though you were clearly understeering somewhat.

Actually, the video was captured by a friend just for fun, no affiliation with Subaru at all. He has a buddy who mixes music, which is where the background "soundtrack" came from.

Mike, the exhaust seems pretty tame on the highway. Honestly, I normally have the stereo jacked up , so I don't notice the exhaust at all.

Great clips, and great representing!
