Talking OK, WRX guys, what's the easy stuff to do to my sister's car?

Not being a WRX owner myself, I haven't been keeping up with the various iterations of the Forced Induction Forum. So, I'm not sure what the cool, easy, first mods are. She's at about 1300 miles, so I'm going to change the oil (Mobil 1, of course, with Bosch filter), hopefully today. Then it's time to start having a little bit of fun. I don't intend to spend megabucks, since it ain't my car, and she wouldn't appreciate the changes as much as I would anyway.

So, snorkusectomy - anyone have any good instructions, or is it just "1. Get into inner fender, 2. Remove snorkus, 3. Re-install fender liner" as it was for my Legacy? K&N - part number?

Any other easy stuff I should look into? Thanks...

1.)K&N # 33-2031-2 (pretty sad, I have it memorized)

2.) Gutter guard on hood scoop. (+25 hp)

3.) Lose the RE-92's. She's your sister damnit. If you were her, would you want to be driving on them.

4) Emblem mod (only 20 hp ).

5) NESIC sticker mod (guaranteed 50 hp)

6) Beastie Boy CD mod (preferably Paul's Boutique, but others will work )

Pat,

I'm about at 4500 miles and will be going to synthetic too. 1300 miles is a little on the short side of the break-in.

Is the car an auto or stick?

recommended mods:
column mount boost gauge
intercooler screen
synthetic gear lube
tires

Pat -

1. Yeah, just go into the front right inner fender. Keep track of all the grommets. There 4 different types. One 10mm bolt down there, another one from under the hood, and the thing is off. Now some people just leave the holes there, some tape it up, and I cut off the bottom part of the silencer and put the top back to look bone stock.

2. Daytime Running Lights. Unplug or remove the transistor next to the front right strut tower.

3. Remove the huge ugly airbag labels on the sunvisor with "Goof Off".

4. Maybe look into a sedan swaybar for the rear.

Oh yeah, the car's a stick. I will probably pick up a Sola shift knob (red, to match the car) like the one I have for my cars.

MBC is probably not in the picture - she wouldn't appreciate it the way we would.

Tires is definitely on the list, but I'm not footing the bill for those, so I'll leave that up to her. I drove it last night and told her she needs new tires, that the RE92s really suck (I had forgotten how bad they really are).

Sway bar is also in the picture, although I'd prefer she learn how to drive the car as is before I start throwing drop throttle oversteer into the picture.

Not sure about the DRLs, that's another one I'll leave up to her to decide.

Keep the comments rollin' in (except you, Keith - did I mention her boyfriend is a 3rd degree black belt in karate, and no I'm not kidding ).

Thumbs up

I would also recommend the rear bumper cover and cargo net. Oh yeah, and a V1(that car is gonna get her in trouble).

If she's not nice to her big brother, than you can torture her by giving her your DMS-GOLD!

Okay, more seriously, you should look into something to cover up those fog lamps. Stoneguards, or the plastic covers I got from Subaru Australia. They cost a bit less than STi covers.

As always I'll be the "well-grounded" person.

She needs Horns Pat. Can't remember how many times I've 'beeped' and the bycycle guy snickers at me. Now with some Roots (just like hella supertones) they stop. Would hate to see someone jump in front of your sister.

Oh, and what do other WRX owners think of Roger's comments about break-in? I know an engine isn't really broken in for thousands of miles, but I've always thought that the first 1000 was the real tough part. She's probably up to 1500 by now, and I probably won't get to the oil change until this weekend, so there's another couple hundred. So should I go Mobil1 or just put more dino oil in it and wait on the Mobil1 until 4500 or so?

I'm waiting until 10,000 miles until I go synthetic. I'm sure you've heard people debating about properly breaking in the seals...blah, blah, blah. Well, I'm not going to get into a debate of any sort, cuz I can't back any of it up. But, thought I'd let you know what I planned on doing.

Well, Pat, every time someone asks about when to switch over to synthetic on the WRX board, you'll get 100 replies with 100 opinion. Same thing with when to do the first oil change. I'll just tell you what I did, and you can decide. I basically followed the schedule in the manual. 1st change at 3000 with dino oil, and then 2nd change at 7500, this time with Mobil 1. And I think I'll just stick with the 7500 mile interval, as perscribed by the manual.

Dino 5w-30 or 10w-30 changes from now until 5-6k is what I'm planning on for mine. I can't back it up either.

I did do an Amsoil air filter.

Yup, I agree with what Ray said. I originally wanted to change it between 5,000-7,500 miles, but thought why not just wait a little longer to be on the safe side. It ain't gonna hurt, if anything it'll be better. That's all.

Pat, for my RS I did (after the first 1000 mile change via dealer):
Non-Synthetic 5W-30 Oil
First 10-12K miles
Changed every 3500 miles
Oil Filter every 7000 miles

Then, I switched to:
Synthetic Mobile One 5W-30
Oil changed every 5000 miles
Oil Filter every 5000 miles
Remember I don't drive the car every day, so 5000 miles for me takes 3-5 months depending on travel. I always make sure to keep checking the level before long trips and motorsport events, to be on the safe side. No burning/disappearing oil for me yet.

I also rotate the tires every 5000 miles from day one of owning the car. My Re-730's are wearing very nice, and my snows look like new.

Yeah your right about the first couple thousand miles being the tough part. At this stage there are lots of machined peices all starting to wear and 'seat' and 'break-in'. Although it is far less critical now than is was 30 years ago, (as machined pieces are made to much narrower tolerances now) proper break-in procedures still do make a difference.

Call me nuts, but in addition to using regular petroleum based oil, I like to do the first oil change around 600 to 800 miles. My reasoning is that a great deal of wear occurs as the engine is getting broken in. Changing the oil at this point removes much of these wear particles, and allows for a much smoother break in.

I do know that corvette and porsche and maybe a few other hi-tech cars specifically recomend Mobil One synthetics, but for an ordanary car that gets driven daily, just changing the oil every 3,000 miles is good enough.

How about those magnetic flame jobs ?
For like fourty bucks, you simply place these things say on the hood and on the door, behind the front wheels. Makes the car stand out, and draws lots of attention (sometimes unwanted) to it (and your sister too).

After she flips out and says "What did you do to my car" ?
You can simply remove them...

Seriously you might try tinting some of the windows so the car stays cool.

Read through the whole post and no one said:
short throw shifter!

Well, that's really a personal one, since not everyone likes shorter throws. So if you have a short throw on your car, you can let her drive it for a while, see how she likes it.

they did do a poll in one of the forums a while back, and the mileage range that got the most votes for switchover to synth was 5k-7k.
